The results are in! After nine days of hard campaigning in the usually quiet district of Bukit Batok, Murali Pillai of People's Action Party (PAP) emerged victorious in a straight fight for the title of Member of Parliament (MP) in the single member constituency.

Scoring 14,428 votes, the 48-year-old won by 61.21 percent in Bukit Batok as he proclaimed an "ambitious agenda" for the district. His opponent — 53-year-old Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Dr Chee Soon Chuan — won over 9,142 votes at 38.79 percent. A defeat it may be, but the figure stands to be the veteran opposition politician's personal best since 1997. Maybe it had something to do with his promise to be a full-time MP if he was elected — even pledging to make Bukit Batok the envy of Singapore.

Mother of autistic youth appeals for more understanding towards those with special needs

Over the weekend, a Facebook post by Choo Kah Ying, the mother of Sebastien, a 20-year-old autistic teen, went viral. She recounted an incident at Bishan Park, which ended in her son being handcuffed and put into a police car for the first time, "not because he committed a crime, but because of fear and poor judgment".

The pair were at the park on Saturday morning to skate. Along the way, Sebastien ran over to a truck to open and close its doors — one of his "obsessions" that Choo found difficult to stop. But the workers gathered nearby didn't mind and smiled reassuringly at her.

Punggol Nasi Padang

We interrupt your lunchtime with a horrifying story that could put you off your appetite — a woman uncovered a solid black centipede cowering in her nasi padang last week.

The freaky find was made public through The New Paper, as 40-year-old Egyptian national Safina Mohamed Mohamed alerted the paper about her creepy-crawly consternation at the Punggol Nasi Padang outlet in Century Square Mall. Concealed underneath vegetables, white rice and ikan assam pedas was the dead centipede, which she says was "as long as a finger". We're pretty sure that she didn't accidentally order a serving of the myriapod in her meal.

SCDF NSF's account of a day on duty should shame ignorant army boys and members of the public

More often than not, the term 'National Service' here is associated with the boys in green (in the Singapore Armed Forces) rather than the lads in blue (the police, firefighters and paramedics in Home Team).

Even more prevailing is the sentiment that non-army folks have it easy in comparison to soldiers — boys sent to serve in the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the Singapore Police Force for their National Service don't get as glorified as those sent to Tekong. As many would know, menfolk who went through army training seem to have a hard on for trading stories of tough training, tougher commanding officers and other nostalgic tales of yore — with some scoffing at friends who were sent to other uniformed vocations.

Last Thursday, a Singapore Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency stop at Incheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. SQ16, bound for San Francisco, was ordered by an air traffic controller to pull the brakes after Korean Air's KE929, headed for Saint Petersburg in Russia, taxied near an intersection on the runway without permission. Both aircrafts were about 1.7km apart when they came to a complete stop.

Reportedly travelling between 90km/h and 100km/h in preparation for take-off, SQ16 shredded its tyres in an attempt to brake and avoid disaster. The aborted take-off caused a number of tyres on the Boeing 777-300ER to deflate, resulting in the 186 passengers and 18 crew on board disembarking on the taxiway.

Here's one mother that we hope had a really good Mother's Day celebration yesterday. Co-founder of SAFE Singapore — a channel for friends, parents and family members of LGBTQ individuals — Dr Khoo Hoon Eng is a proud mother of two gay sons, and thanks to Dear Straight People, she recounts her experience in a heartwarming interview.

"To parents of LGBT children, my advice would be 'Please choose love'", she says.

Disregard the reverb-laden dialogue and take comfort in the fact that understanding parents such as Dr Khoo exists in the world.

Annoying excretory viral content producer Goody Feed may have been righteously shut down in the clickbait crackdown by Facebook but their dastardly listicles seems to have returned in the form of new website Today Up Feed

Photo: Facebook screengrab

Sporting the same logo, vigorous regurgitation of meaningless content and the very same 'social like gate' plugin that got Goody Feed banished in the first place, the unwanted sequel already has nearly 23,000 likes on their Facebook page — even though their first ever post was made on Apr 27. They also seem to like tagging themselves in every Facebook post, which is pretty much the same as liking your own posts.

On the evening of May 6, a Malaysian man was arrested at the Woodlands Checkpoint. His crime? An attempt to smuggle 3,346 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore. Stashed in a modified compartment on the roof of his lorry, the contraband items' potential duty and Goods and Services Tax came up to $259,650 and $26,140 respectively.

The 39-year-old driver is currently assisting with investigations, according to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. The cigarettes and the vehicle, which was transporting a consignment supposedly containing 100 rolls of 'Single-Face Roll Papers', were handed over to the Singapore Customs.

ICA declared that it will continue with security checks on passengers and vehicles at checkpoints to weed out attempts to smuggle in contraband items like drugs, weapons and explosives.

A drive at night in Geylang held an interesting turn of events for Raymond Chan and his bros when they came across a woman in a flowing white dress standing in the middle of the road.

Initially jolted by the appearance of the spectre-like figure (with appropriate Hokkien exclamations used), Chan and his friends dissolved into laughter when they realised it was just some crackpot. Watch their shenanigans and listen to their commentary through the captured dashcam footage:

He had picked up the cat from a staircase landing at the ground floor, went up to the 13th floor and threw the helpless creature off the parapet. He then took the lift down to "see whether (it) managed to survive the fall".

Egg tarts are flying off the shelves at Tai Cheong Bakery's second pop-up in Takashimaya's basement food hall. Expect snaking queues and long waits, as people with unlimited time on their hands get in line for a chance to sample famous egg custard treats by the popular Hong Kong brand. As of now, you've got about a week to make your way to town (and while you're at it, might as well queue for BAKE Cheese Tart in Ion Orchard before your patience runs out).

But if you're the type who'd rather wait for the hype to die down, you're in luck. The bakery will soon be opening up shop at a permanent space in Singapore. Keep an eye out for updates.

Yesterday, we got excited about the prospect of $5 chirashi-dons at the newly-opened Superbowl. What a good deal, we thought, as we proceeded to spread the word.

Well, guess there's no such thing as a $5 lunch. (Okay, those do exist, but not here). Our Tuesday wasn't so super after all, 'cause the opening promo so clearly stated in caps on the Facebook event page never once mentioned the add-ons. Just a vague "terms & conditions apply", which could mean basically anything.
