untracing the conspiracy

This is your rare chance to watch a documentary about Operation Spectrum, a covert security crackdown in 1987 where 22 people were arrested and detained under the Internal Security Act for their involvement in an alleged Marxist conspiracy to bring down the government and establish a Marxist state.

1987: Untracing the Conspiracy is the controversial title by director Jason Soo. Featuring interviews with the ex-detainees and political exiles about the first 30 days of their ordeal, the film was first screened at the Singapore leg of the Freedom Film Festival last year, after receiving an R21 rating from the Media Development Authority.

Using electronic gadgets, six people managed to somehow hack and cheat slot machines at both the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) casinos.

Police have since arrested the group of three men and three women — aged between 33 and 41 — comprising of one Czech, four Russians and one Filipino.

Officers from the Casino Crime Investigation Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were alerted to the case on May 7 and quickly established the identities of the suspects. The next day, CID executed a coordinated operation that nabbed four suspects at the casinos and two other at a hotel in Tanjong Pagar. 16 mobile phones, a laptop, cash and other items worth over $125,000 were seized as evidence.

Silver Man: The tale of Singapore's wildest busker

Decked head to toe in silver and standing semi-nude on a pedestal, Roy Payamal contorts his body in slow motion to the music of AC/DC. One moment, he is still — is he even breathing? The next, his mouth gapes open, emitting a silent roar.

The 52-year-old conveys the impression that he’s from another planet. His message is encrypted, hard to understand. Does he bring us post-apocalyptic cautionary tales? Is he inciting us to riot? He seems to be at once grieving and partying. It is a heretic, disconcerting sight. Some passers-by avert their gaze, others walk away in a hurry.

This year's National Day Parade may not be on your mind yet, but ticket applications are already open. From May 13-22, you can apply for a chance to watch the celebratory spectacle unfold in front of your eyes — tickets in batches of two, four and six are available for two preview shows (July 23 and 30) and the actual day (August 9). But the lesser tickets you apply for, the more likely you are to get them, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible to apply, and those successful will be notified from June 2 to 8 via the contact number provided. Things to take note of: Each NRIC holder is restricted to one application, tickets are not distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis (so chill out), and successful applicants last year will not be considered this year.

Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam has repeatedly stressed that a terror attack in Singapore is a matter of "when" and not "if" amidst recent months of armed assaults and bombings around the world.

The apprehension is palpable too, especially since the twisted teachings of the Islamic State has infected some here — all of whom have been promptly shut down by the Internal Security Act. In the latest effort by the Home Team to raise vigilance against such horrors, the Singapore Police Force released a video that should teach folks what to do when terror strikes. Apparently, it's all about "Run, Hide, Tell".

German girl shrine

There's an obscure temple on Pulau Ubin, believed to contain the remains of a German girl who lived with her family on the island over a century ago. Local folklore says that she died during the Japanese invasion in World War II. According to the National Heritage board however, it actually happened during World War I, when she ran to the mountaintop to escape from British soldiers before slipping off a cliff, meeting her untimely death.

Villagers found her body and began praying to her, asking for winning lottery numbers. When many of them started to strike it big, they built a small shrine to worship her.

Imagine if you will, breaking your hand and then being informed by the doctor to get back to work two days after that.

A construction worker was told just that when he received treatment at Raffles Hospital — and his injury got even worse days after he was discharged.

The errant doctor has since been found guilty of professional misconduct and was suspended for six months, according to the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). It took over four years for the judgement to be passed since the time of the incident in 2011, but justice was indeed served in the end.

51-year-old Dr Wong Him Choon had treated the worker on Sep 3, 2011 after an accident at a construction site. He assessed that the patient sustained a distal radius fracture on his right hand, and performed surgery on it the next day.

Why your Singaporean home is much more expensive than you think

In Singapore, most people are encouraged to own their own homes, be it a HDB flat or a private property. According to Singstats, home ownership rate among Singapore households is currently about 91 percent, which ranked us among the top 3 countries in the world.

Generally speaking, home ownership is a good thing from a personal finance standpoint. Having your own home means you avoid having to pay rent to someone else for your accommodations, and do not have to worry about escalating rental cost. Even if you have to service a monthly mortgage, it is more comforting to know that the repayments go towards helping you build equity in your own home.

This gig is part of their Take Heart tour, which promises to take things to "a whole new level". Before that, have a sing-along session to their latest music video.

A day out bushwalking in Australia's Blue Mountains National Park turned into tragedy for a Singaporean teaching student, who died after plunging down a waterfall yesterday afternoon.

Cheng Shi Min had been hiking with her Australian boyfriend Harry Yendle, her father and another family friend when she slipped and fell 20 metres down. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that she was peering over the edge of the top of the falls when she lost her footing.

Yendle rushed down to her to find Cheng lying face down in a shallow pool of water. They tried in vain to pull her out of the freezing water for about 20 minutes.
