The 1872 Clipper Tea Co

This is a treat for tea lovers. At the new takeaway concept outlet of The 1872 Clipper Tea Co, there's a retail space, a tea bar to serve up your chosen blend, and a selection of tea-infused desserts to complete the entire experience.

Sip on favourites like apple pie, a combination of cold brewed tea with apple slices, cloudy apple juice and cinnamon syrup, or lemongrass-ginger, a blend of cold brewed tea with candied ginger and lemongrass syrup. For something a little unique, order the gula melaka tea latte and savour the milky sweetness. The tea blends here range from classic to fruity to caffeine-free, and prices go for $4.50 to $6.50 per cup.

As for the sweet stuff, they've got options like the lemon yuzu eclair, matcha tiramisu, and earl grey truffle. For a hot or cold drink and a pastry, get the high tea set ($12-$14).

Amidst a tense climate involving a heightened terror threat around the world, Singapore's taking a page out of Call of Duty in their efforts to combat terrorism.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will be redoubling their efforts to gear up against any imminent plot on Singapore, enhancing their Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) with badass weapons, perks and ability tiers. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, bullpup submachine guns, tactical sensors, tank-y troop transportation — counter-terrorism efforts are getting an extra edge with new tech.

Prevalent impression that "Singapore was a sleepy fishing village in 1965" gets skewered

1965

If you can recall last year (through the thick sentimental fog that is SG50), the rhetoric that Singapore was a small fishing village in 1965 gets thrown around a lot.

Though untrue, it does fit better in an engineered narrative designed to invoke stronger feelings of patriotism. The "50 years ago, Singapore was just a fishing village until Lee Kuan Yew liberated the nation" spiel sounds inspiring of course, and the impression may have stuck — especially among young Singaporeans who don't know better.

Teenyboppers will be pleased as punch to hear new songs performed by the American singer-songwriter known for ballads like 'Waiting Outside the Lines'. The 18-year-old rose to fame after his 2010 performance of Lady Gaga's 'Paparazzi' went viral on YouTube, but that was years ago, and he's all grown up now. So expect an evening of stripped-down acoustic versions of his new tracks like 'Hit & Run' and 'Afterlife'.

On the Desert Road: The unbearable lightness of going for Umrah

It was after spending 12 hours flying in daylight that I finally landed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, waking up from a slumber induced by a viewing of Being John Malkovich on my iPhone and two platters of airplane hummus, which my dad wasn't too keen about. All around my economy seat on the Emirates plane, voices in various tongues started chiming upwards, figures clad in white cloth started pulling down their belongings from the overhead compartments and rushing to the aisles, their robes hanging off their shoulders — bare midriffs of men exposed.

So... Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice turned out to be a stinker, all action and no plot. But there's hope yet. Marvel's next superhero flick, Captain America: Civil War, sees the Cap take on former friend Iron Man, with familiar faces like Black Widow, Vision, Black Panther, Spider-Man and more joining the battle.

Whether you've picked a side or not, you can get in on the action with Uniqlo's new range of Marvel tees splashed with superhero motifs. Naturally, the alter egos of Steve Rogers and Tony Stark are the stars, but names like Thor, The Hulk and Spider-Man also feature here.

Racism strikesagain, this time in a proclamation made by the Tampines 1 mall against Malay patrons.

In a viral Facebook post made by 36-year-old businesswoman Diana Hairul, her enquiry about setting up a pre-Hari Raya fair next month was casually shut down by the mall in Tampines. The sole reason? According to the mall's management, their target audience are "mainly Chinese". Ironically enough, the Tampines district is a well-known to be populated by a large Malay community.

Everything by my side

The Singapore International Festival of Arts is back. And that means an entire month's worth of creative and thought-provoking works to appreciate and ponder upon, starting in August. But if you can't wait that long, there's always the pre-festival, The OPEN (Open, Participate, Engage, Negotiate).

Here's all you need to know about both. SIFA 2016 will present 20 productions, while The OPEN offers 43 programmes. "Potentialities" is the theme for this year's SIFA, and if you're wondering what that means, it's the potential to develop in the future and transform society.

This year, more productions are being commissioned for the fest, with 15 new creations in total, from well-known and emerging artists such as Milo Rau, Loo Zihan and Wu Man. Eight of the productions involve local artists collaborating with international ones.

Newly minted Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) Kok Heng Leun is fast becoming our favourite champion of the arts.

Staying true to his title as an 'Arts NMP', the artistic director of theatre company Drama Box wants to hear the views and opinions of the local creative community — and what better way to do so than in a town hall meeting? Kok has been garnering praise from his fellow stalwarts of art in Singapore since his powerful speech in Parliament recently, and support behind him looks to get even stronger.

Lee Wei Ling

Amidst all the salty troubles between former The Sunday Times columnist Dr. Lee Wei Ling and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), her ex-editor has spilled the beans on why they weren't willing to publish her story.

You might recall that on the day after the first death anniversary of her father — Lee Kuan Yew — she published a lengthy essay on her Facebook page about how the pragmatic founding prime minister would have cringed at all the veneration. 'Twas strange of course — usually her passages would appear as columns on The Sunday Times

Its management is on the hunt for a new space in a mall, most likely along Orchard Road, so the brand won't be disappearing for good.

The caveman's supper

Unleash the beast within you at FYR Cycene Ond Drinc, where the new Caveman Supper boasts a mammoth platter stacked with juicy slabs of meat. To commemorate its first anniversary, the restaurant goes back to the basics with an array of tender chunks grilled, flamed and charred to perfection.

Think 800g of suckling pig, sous vide for seven hours, then roasted for five hours, grilled and smoked. Then there's 800g of a whole chicken, marinated with five spices, sous vide for five hours and grilled in the Josper charcoal oven. Things get even better with 300g of slow roasted beef short ribs, 200g of sous vide and grilled lamb ribs, 200g of seared and grilled pork belly, 300g of baked bone marrow and 100g of braised and smoked tripe. If that doesn't awaken your inner carnivore, we don't know what will.

Photographer captures Singapore in all its quirky pastel-colored charm

Pastel

Soft pastel colors aren't what we'd usually associate with Singapore's landscapes — a panorama that's typically filled with steel-gray futuristic structures and old buildings in the process of being torn down.

Successfully capturing the nostalgic spirit of old Singapore in washed out colors is local photographer Nguan, in his ongoing project simply entitled "Singapore". By honing in and enhancing the pastel colors of the city's various landmarks, people and quiet alcoves, Singapore becomes a theatrical set of sorts, artfully painted for a stage fit for any Wes Anderson flick.
