Sorry little Batman fans (or bat enthusiasts, we don't judge), IKEA has recalled their LATTJO bat capes due to risks of strangulation or injuries to the neck.

IKEA Singapore has urged customers who bought the LATTJO to stop children from playing with it immediately and bring them back to any IKEA store for a full refund, no receipts required.

Apparently, reports have popped up in IKEA's radar about three kids who've received bat-shaped marks and scratches on the neck while using the bat capes. Additionally, the cape wasn't easily detachable from their necks, risking strangulation.

As if riding a rollercoaster wasn't scary enough, the fright levels got amped up to another level at Universal Studios Singapore (USS) yesterday when the ride stopped moving, leaving folks strapped and no where to go in mid-air.

The troubled Battlestar Galactica: Human vs Cylon rollercoaster acted up once again when a technical error struck at about 4pm. A witness who spoke to The Straits Times mentioned that the riders were left dangling for about 20 minutes before everyone was rescued.

"Standard operating procedures were followed to evacuate riders safely from the lower section of the ride," said a Resorts World Sentosa spokesperson. The ride was resumed at 5.08pm after routine safety checks.

With the ever-changing retail scene in Singapore, it seems no one is safe. Sure, there've been expansions and new labels popping up — Japanese chain Uniqlo, for one, will not stop till it has a store on every corner — but there've also been plenty of shops closing their shutters for good. Recently, the Dubai-based conglomerate Al-Futtaim Group, who owns names like Robinsons, Marks & Spencer, Ted Baker, Mango and Bershka, announced the impending closure of ten of unnamed stores here. Even beloved local vintage shop Granny's Day Out is bowing out after 11 years of operations.

Many cross-border commuters can attest to the crazy, crazy amount of motorcyclists clogging up the immigration checkpoints every morning and evening — but a solution might be able to reduce the amount of smog and tension soon.

Minister of Home Affairs K Shanmugam announced that motorcyclists entering Singapore will go through automated clearance facilities by the end of the year. Through passport and thumbprint scanning, it should be able to drive up efficiency and convenience without compromising security, said the minister.

Changi Airport's upcoming Terminal 4 is said to be featuring more of such self-service, fuss-free immigration facilities with automated lanes and biometric checks. Not mentioned however is how some folks will inevitably mess up the systems with grimy, sticky fingers. Eugh.

State Coroner Marvin Bay however assured yesterday that no such teenage folly took place, according to a Channel NewsAsia report. All allegations and rumours of Shina's death occurring due to parkour, bullying or being dared were unfounded in his investigations.

The official sequence of events on Oct 20 last year is as follows:

Healthy eating is a lifestyle, or so they say. We're too busy stuffing our faces with deep fried goodness to notice otherwise. Starting from today, passengers on flights going to Europe and Australia get to enjoy the new menu. Here are some of your economy and premium economy choices: Quinoa ratatouille with chick peas, steamed fish with wolfberry sauce and brown rice, tofu cheesecake, and let's not forget the ever-popular alternative to H2O — coconut water.

Over 150 stalls in Chinatown Street Market to be refurbished for safety reasons

Singapore Chinatown

Starting from the end of this year, 159 stalls at Chinatown Street Market will be refurbished. Located along Pagoda, Sago, Smith and Trengganu Streets, these stalls have been worn down by time, making them potential fire hazards. Renovations will begin in phases, during which 13 to 20 stalls could be affected at any one time, and shuttered for eight to 10 weeks.

Safety elements like sprinklers and insulated roofs will be added, and the area will be revamped to look cleaner and newer. It's definitely a welcome change, if you ask us. The market's been looking a little dilapidated in recent times, what with all the traffic that has been through since its launch in 2004.

Scandalised ex-MP David Ong issued apology letters to residents of his former Bukit Batok ward

The high standard of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) proved to be unattainable for former Member of Parliament (MP) David Ong, who had an extramarital affair with a grassroots volunteer in his constituency.

His abrupt resignation last month was of course a shocker — PAP politicians were supposed to be pure and clean as their white uniform symbolised no? Ong was relieved from his post, despite being actually well loved by his Bukit Batok constituents (and obviously super-loved by his married mistress too).

Presumably driven by guilt, Ong was reported by Lianhe Zaobao to have sent personal letters of apology to residents of his former ward, expressing his regret for not completing his term in office.

Ministry of Home Affairs wants to combat terrorism with ERP gantries

One of the many ways Singapore's planning to counter terrorism and serious crime is a typically Big Brother-esque one — widening the usage of video camera footage on public transports and Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) systems.

According to Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam, the sources contain important data that could be vital to security amid heightened threat environment — increased frequency of terrorist attacks worldwide.

This would be a total turnaround from initial sentiments from the Government that some of the data acquired through the mentioned systems would not be used.

Thick columns of smoke were captured on camera and uploaded on the Punggol 21 community page, showing a portion of an open field beside Block 256, Sumang Walk burning up.

On Feb 22, a weak and hungry four-month-old pangolin was found wandering along Upper Thomson Road. Rescuers immediately took it to Wildlife Reserves Singapore's rescued wildlife centre, where vets did their best to hand-raise it. Even though these creatures don't usually thrive under human care, the baby Sunda pangolin has been showing signs of recovery, like lapping up ants' eggs, burrowing in a play tub, and clinging on to its caretaker's arm, resistant to let go.

Just as another long-ass week started to wind down into the weekend, commuters were hit with early morning anxiety when a train fault disrupted services on the Circle Line.

Troubles started when SMRT tweeted that an additional travel time of 15 minutes are to be expected between Dhoby Ghaut and Bishan around 7.30 this morning.

The train fault was soon cleared — but commuters had to wait even longer in the already crowded stations.

Oh dear, it looks like Member of Parliament (MP) Denise Phua might have made a grave error in articulation when she made a highly controversial speech in Parliament on Wednesday.

The MP for Jalan Besar GRC — a constituency covering a part of Little India — made folks more than a little displeased when she made a couple of suggestions to ensure against a repeat of the 2013 riot in the district.

"It was obvious that the pre-riot crowds have returned to Little India," she noted, relating to a recent visit to Little India. "Congregations of such high density are walking time-bombs and public disorder incidents waiting to happen."

Cat hoarding cases in Singapore on the rise in recent years

When did cat hoarding become a thing? And why are people mistreating the furry felines, like in the Yishun case where more than 30 cats were rescued from cages covered in faeces?

The problem seems to be on the rise. In 2009, the Cat Welfare Society said it handled around five cases on average per year. Now, the number has increased to seven to ten annually, due to more public awareness and helpful neighbours who report serious cases.
