Video: Kindergarten kids instructed to bow properly in front of Lee Kuan Yew's picture

There's nothing wrong with paying respects to Lee Kuan Yew of course, but surely there's a clear boundary where it starts to get a wee bit creepy and indoctrinating?

In a video captured and posted on Facebook by netizen Tengmu Fuming, a group of kindergarten kids are politely being commanded to bow properly in front of a shrine remembrance site dedicated to the late founding prime minister. Well-intentioned it may be, but it just might be a little too much when teachers are urging impressionable toddlers to kowtow to a man they might not even fully fathom.

Your exasperated, sweaty claims of Singapore getting hotter and hotter these days aren't all that untrue after all. According to the Meteorological Service, our little red dot has been growing even redder with temperatures rising at twice the rate of the global average.

An average increase of 0.25 degrees Celcius per decade was recorded here between 1948 and 2015 — contrasting with the global warming rate of 0.12 degrees Celcius over a similar period. That's not all though; the number of warm days and warm nights have also increased.

2015 was already noted to be among the warmest in Singapore's history, with an annual mean temperature of 28.3 degrees Celcius, which exceeds the average of 0.8 degrees Celcius. Last year was event the second driest year on record, just behind 1997, which only had 1,118.9mm of rainfall recorded.

New to the waterfront restaurant is a cold cuts platter ($75), a medley of lomo iberico, chorizo iberico and jamon iberico with slices of bread and tomatoes. Because why order one type of cured meat when you can have 'em all?

As if the troubles of SMRT weren't already alarming enough as it is, a young man was arrested for bringing a toy rifle into Bugis MRT station last week.

On March 15, the police were alerted to a rifle-wielding man in the afternoon, causing some distress among members of the public who were unaware that it was a toy. From the image police provided, it looks more like a cosplayer's prop than a military replica — the only danger it posed was the threat to the man's masculinity.

Amidst the outrage and sorrow concerning the fatal accident that killed two SMRT staff on the tracks near Pasir Ris MRT station yesterday, the transport operator announced that they'll be reviewing their safety protocols.

Barely a couple of months into their job, young trainees Nasrulhudin Najumudin and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari were killed when a train hit them during an investigation into a triggered signalling condition monitoring device.

In a media conference held yesterday evening, SMRT Corp CEO Desmond Kuek assured the media that they'll be pushing for improvements into their current standard operating procedures.

Lee Kuan Yew video

A year after the passing of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Singaporeans young and old are commemorating the man in their own ways. Everyone's talking about #RememberingLKY, whether it's through gatherings and events or posters and art installations.

One of the tributes comes in the form of a video by Big 3 Media titled 'LKY: Did I Fail?', which went viral in less than a day. Less than two minutes long, the animated clip uses some of LKY's most famous words in a voiceover, charting a quick summary of his impact on Singapore and the legacy he left behind.

Judging by the overwhelmingly positive reactions, most people are appreciative of the video and what it stands for.

It has been a tragic conflict-ridden past couple of days as multiple bombings took place in Turkish capital of Ankara, as well as in Brussels' Zaventem Airport.

"Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones," they said, noting that the terrorist attacks in Brussels took place despite heightened security measures.

A year on since the death of Singapore's first prime minister, a 64-page workbook chronicling his life and life's work is being issued to each and every secondary school student in the country.

It's called LKY: Follow the Rainbow, Go Ride It— yes, it's his quote, but what a horrible title for a book — and it's supposed to be a sort of bible on everything Lee Kuan Yew. Quotes, photographs, interviews, newspaper articles — everything's compiled into one convenient tome for students to hold near and dear to their heart.

Forget ah kong

There's been a lot of buzz today about the first anniversary of Lee Kuan Yew's death. And rightly so — he's Singapore's founding Prime Minister, after all, and he contributed heaps to building up our nation.

But then there are people who take the act of paying tribute to the extreme — ones who claim to see LKY's cloud-shaped face in the sky shining down upon us, or teachers who instruct kindergarten kids to bow before a remembrance site.

So how much is too much? Where is the line between respectfully commemorating the man's death and expressing reverence to the point of worship? And when will the flood of LKY stories (which already started earlier this month) come to an end?

A master in the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, 54-year-old Tung Eng Hwa used his well-honed deflective skills to malicious ends when he put the blame on his student for a fatal traffic accident that he actually caused.

The tai chi master and businessman had done so in fear of heavier repercussions — he wasn't supposed to be behind the wheel in the first place. He had been banned from driving for 21 months for drink driving five months prior to the accident that killed a pedestrian along Still Road.

The Minister of Transport — a man who everyone believes to be the right man to fix public transport issues — is under a flurry of attacks by netizens who deemed him insensitive after a Facebook post.

Call it just really really bad timing, but Minister Khaw Boon Wan made a post on his Facebook page yesterday, celebrating a milestone where the Downtown Line arrived at 150 days without any service disruptions. Unfortunately, yesterday was also the day when the most tragic of train service disruptions transpired — two young SMRT staff were killed in the line of duty near Pasir Ris MRT station.

Pandamonium at the zoo as mating season begins for Kai Kai and Jia Jia

The wait for a baby panda has been unbearable. Who can forget last April, when the River Safari's giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia, aged nine and eight, mated with zero success? (Anyone else felt bamboozled?)

Neither natural mating nor artificial insemination worked, but before you clutch your hair in despair, know that nothing is im-paw-sible. This year, the duo have a second shot at love. Breeding season usually takes place from February to May, which means you'll see them getting beary intimate soon.

In preparation of the three-day sexathon — where the pandas will be cooped up in their dens, away from prying eyes — Kai Kai has been faithfully performing his 'sexercises' (read: standing repeatedly on his hind legs for a few seconds to strengthen them). Don't laugh, the dude needs better stamina for a higher success rate.
