A trip to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic for a massage proved to have unexpected, tragic consequences for young Serene Lim.

The 27-year-old suffered a seizure during the tuina session, slipped into a coma and passed away an hour later.

Lianhe Wanbao reports that Lim had gone for a 7.30pm massage session last Sunday at the Qing Kang Integrated Chinese Medicine Clinic at Midpoint Orchard shopping mall. Midway during the two-hour session — involving brushing, kneading, rolling, pressing and rubbing along the meridians of the body — Lim's body shook violently.

Taking the piss out of all that overt solemness, gravitas and dramatic weight of Divian Nair's viral plea to Singaporeans, beloved satirist and blogger mrbrown hits back with his own patriotic video.

Taking on the persona of Kim Huat, "Singapore Number One Patriotic Fan", he too states that he will not die for Singapore — instead he wants to make the enemy die for his own country. Instead of Nair's banner of 'Majulah' as call of unity, Kim Huat share his own word for the nation: 'Basket'.

A local euphemism for the word 'bastard', the patriot wants the aged Singaporean exclamation to be revived, and even explains how it can establish support, compassion, direction and justice. Basket lah this guy.

Just as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong returned from a very enlightening trip to the United States (meeting up with Silicon Valley bigwigs and President Obama), a surprise awaited him back home — over 1 million likes on his Facebook page.

Guess people really love his dad-jokes and the unoffending, politically correct banter. Great job to his social media team for making him the most popular Singaporean politician on social media ever.

Many things have been said of Alan Oei and his unpopulist decisions to steer grizzled arts centre The Substation into a new era.

As such, the new artistic director of The Substation wants to clear the air about his vision for the beloved premises in a series of public meetings to discuss the centre's new direction.

In a post on The Substation's Facebook page, Oei acknowledges the "confusion and anxiety" over the issue in a lengthy statement addressing the influx of online criticism against the major changes he proposed.

Someone buy these guys a welcome drink! They may be competition, but SMRT bus captains owe their rivals Go-Ahead Singapore a thank you and maybe a few rounds of beer.

Days after the new bus operator announced a compensation package that's bigger and better than what their counterparts are getting, SMRT today announced a "better and more competitive pay for bus captains and bus operations staff" as well as an "enhanced joining bonus and staff referral scheme."

Woman takes to Facebook to shame man who allegedly mistreated her 7Eleven cashier mother

A viral post on Facebook has a woman ranting about an alleged altercation between an aggro man and her mother, who's a cashier at 7Eleven.

Gladys Tan took to Facebook with a picture of the suspect, who allegedly spouted verbal abuse upon her mother and even threw a tray of sweets at the cashier's face. All because Tan's mother refused to let him purchase alcohol, due to the law that bans the retail sale of alcoholic drinks from 10.30pm to 7am.

Tan also took issue with the fact that the customer was apparently antagonistic partly due to the fact that her mother was not Singaporean.

"Just because she is not a singaporean does not give you the right to degrade her in such way," Tan wrote, clearly not holding her emotions back. "WORSE, FOR A GROWN MAN TO GO VIOLENT ON A WOMEN? YOU DESERVED TO BE SHAMED. SHAME ON YOU ASSHOLE."

Media Literacy Council's campaign to use emojis for a better internet is really, really cringeworthy

In the latest iteration in a long tradition of government-sponsored campaigns, the Emoji Face Challenge is not giving us assurance that their causes should ever be taken seriously.

Bless their hearts, the Media Literacy Council really wanted this campaign to be associated with words such as 'hip', 'relevant' and 'fun'; but the end result is something that's considered 'ugh'. The Council — whose role is to encourage responsible internet usage (HAH) — promoted this year's Safer Internet Day in a rather odd strategy.

Their solution to help create a better internet for all? Making some emojis, and inviting you to mimic them.

Unable to pay back a loanshark, Tay Kun Hong turned to identity theft to settle his troubles. And as a customer service officer with telco M1, he was more than capable of mining all the personal information he needed.

The 33-year-old started mining the database of M1 in March last year and sold them for $5 per subscriber to the ah long, Channel NewsAsiareportsHe asked a friend at Singtel to do the same, and got paid $10 for each name, which he split evenly with his friend. Since Tay was unable to pay his debts, he offered his services in being a personal information provider for a licensed moneylender — and the moneylender agreed.

It's not much, but the British pound has fallen to its lowest against the Singapore dollar today; the lowest since last April.

In April 10 last year, the pound fell below $2.0041 says Bloomberg, with £1 trading at S$2.0019. This afternoon at 4.05pm, £1 traded at $2.0041, a 10-month low.

The pound has stayed dominant against the Singapore dollar, refusing to go below the S$2 mark since November 2013. A wage growth report on Wednesday did result in some fears, causing the Sterling to slide against 12 of their 16 major peers.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) are gearing up for what might be the worst year for the ever-present dengue virus outbreak in Singapore.

Authorities believe and have forecast a whopping number of 30,000 dengue cases in 2016 — way higher than the previous high forecast of 22,170 in 2013.

The figures were announced in a media briefing yesterday, where NEA announced that the annual Mozzi Wipeout Campaign will be held earlier this year on Feb 28, TODAY reports. Over 5,000 grassroots leaders and volunteers have been roped in to visit areas riddled with dengue cases to advise residents on dengue prevention tips.

Sorry BMW drivers, another one of your brethren just brought down your street cred once again.

If not for his quick wit and his Volkswagen GTI's excellent brakes, motorist/metalhead Shaun Tan would have gotten himself into some twisted metal when a silver BMW suddenly emerged from the slip road from ECP Service Road — against the flow of traffic.

His senses and adrenaline already heightened from the near-death experience (and Trivium's Silence in the Snow), Tan parked for a bit afterwards to sort out his car and himself out before carrying on his merry journey... until he found himself behind the very same BMW.

A young administrative staff member of Bukit Batok's Keming Primary School has been sent to the slammer for insulting the modesty of up to 35 women.

Jondave Ong Han Wei was sentenced to 24 weeks in jail for secretly taking videos of women relieving themselves in the common staff toilet of the school, reports The Straits Times.

The 25-year-old had been employed as a school programme executive, performing administrative work. His job scope, however, did not include using cable ties to secure his mobile phone to the sink pipe underneath the basin of a toilet. With the phone camera pointing towards the toilet bowl, he recorded a total of eight videos of female staff over the course of two consecutive days.

Controversial 'Holy Water' segment disallowed in Madonna's Singapore concert

In typical Singaporean fashion, anything controversial and potentially offensive gets struck out of the books — and it'll be the same for the Queen of Pop's first ever concert here.

Initially prohibited from even performing here back in 1993, Madonna will finally be making her Singapore debut next week. Even so, it'll be rated R18 due to sexually suggestive content. According to the Media Development Authority (MDA), Madonna's segment where she sings "Holy Water" is disallowed — a fact that has been confirmed by the concert's investor as well as organisers Live Nation Lushington.

In a statement made last month, MDA deemed "Holy Water" to be a breach into religiously sensitive content, and the organisers have to comply to the license to allow the show to go on.

A birthday party turned into a purging shindig when as many as 33 guests came down with suspected food poisoning after eating the catered food.

Lianhe Wanbao reports that the 33 people celebrated Valentine's Day last week with repeated rounds of vomiting and diarrhoea. The birthday party — held on Feb 13 for a seven-year-old girl — hosted a buffet ordered from Kuisine Catering.

All had gone well until the next morning, when the whole family started having stomach problems. After seeking medical attention, doctors confirmed: yeap, it's food poisoning.

Only one guest of the party didn't fall ill — the individual only ate the cake, and nothing from the catered food.

Taking a break from all their trolling and tales of heroics, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) announced a rather unfortunate piece of news on their Facebook page— the death of a new recruit.

Young enlistee Edwin Ong Koon Chwee had only joined the SCDF three days ago as part of his National Service duties. He had been undergoing training at the National Service Training Institute (NSTI) at Jalan Bahar — but sadly he died this morning. The cause of death is unclear.

"We are providing all necessary assistance to the family during this difficult time," says the SCDF. "The family has requested for privacy during this time of bereavement."

Lottery ticket holders will all be choking with bated breath tonight at 9.30pm awaiting results of Singapore Pools' 2016 Toto Hongbao Draw.

The prize? Oh nothing, just a mere $13.9 million — the biggest ever prize money to date. Initially a jackpot prize of $12 million, the grand prize now stands at nearly $14 million due to the fact there were no winners in the previous two draws. Oh yes.

Long queues have been snaking at the various Singapore Pools branches around the island since the launch of the TOTO Hong Bao Draw. It's bound to go on till tonight too, considering ticket sales close at 9pm — half an hour before the draw begins.

Stray dog requires stitches after getting caught in steel wire trap for days

Dog hurt

Non-profit organisation Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD) recently put up a Facebook post that should enrage dog lovers everywhere — a stray canine badly wounded by a steel wire trap.

Sightings of the bloodied-up dog in Lim Chu Kang were first reported on the eve of Chinese New Year, suspected to be a female whose previous litters of puppies were rescued before. After days of searching, volunteers finally got hold of the clearly petrified dog, which still had the steel wire embedded deep in its torso.

"Any longer, the steel wire could have easily severed her spine, paralysing her and most likely, lead to a horribly slow and painful death," they wrote.

Whitegrass plays it safe but shows flashes of brilliance

COCONUTS CRITIC'S TABLE — “Dessert is actually least Australian dish of the meal,” introduced our server. It was a bowl of coconut mousse, jackfruit ice-cream, over longans, fresh coconut flesh, almonds, and ginger cake, scattered with broken coconut macarons and flower petals. It looked like an artfully smashed pavlova, though less sweet, with the pungency of the jackfruit introduced at a non-offensive level.

Three weeks into the official opening of Whitegrass, and chef Sam Aisbett, former head chef at Quay Restaurant and Tetsuya’s Sydney alumni, is still playing it safe.

A stray dog's agony was painfully recounted on the Facebook page of Action for Singapore Dogs (ASD), which posted a photo of a canine with horrible wounds around its torso due to a steel wire trap

In the outrage that followed, some fingers are being pointed at the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA), who are known to employ external contractors to trap stray animals.

TODAY reports, however, that AVA has not in fact engaged any such jobs to trap stray dogs in the Lim Chu Kang area recently, where the dog in subject — now called Nima — was found.
