MAS rolls out fresh new notes and "good-as-new" ones in time for Chinese New Year

Putting in the 'new' in Chinese New Year is the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), who announced that they're issuing crisp $2 notes fresh from the oven to commemorate the occasion.

What's more notable though is their "good-as-new" initiative, which sees notes that are in excellent condition being circulated back into the market. Last Lunar New year, the proportion of "good-as-new" notes increased to 17 percent of total $2 notes being circulated.

Since the initiative launched in 2013, MAS states that they've doubled the amount of energy saved from printing lesser $2 notes; energy saved in 2015 alone was enough to power a hundred 4-room HDB flats for seven weeks, they claim.

The "good-as-new" $2 notes as well as new notes will be available at retail banks from tomorrow onwards.

A man's desperate quest for love pushed him to turn to the realm of the magical when he bought some love potion online and used it on woman.

The substances he thought would cause her to fall in love with him? Yeah, those turned out to be poison.

Wong Fook Hiong has since been sentenced to the maximum fine of $1,500 for negligently endangering  life, The Straits Times reports.

The married 43-year-old technical support officer had bought two vials of the substance online for $287 and poured them into the water bottle of his target at Ngee Ann Polytechnic last year. On a couple of occasions, the 30-year-old woman drank the horrible concoction, which she found to be of bitter taste.

When you're dealing with large amounts of money on a daily basis as part of your job, it's tempting to just keep all those cash for yourself.

For 36-year-old former finance manager Smita Salil Mhatre however, she carried out exactly that when she misappropriated about $470,000 from her employer progressively over six years.

The permanent resident has since been sentenced to jail for 46 months, The Straits Times reports, after she pleaded guilty to three of six charges of criminal breach of trust as a servant.

She had joined market research company The Research Pacific Group back in 2006, working her way up from an accounts and administrative executive to finance manager.

Good news for all you unemployed or just looking for something new — more employers in Singapore are looking to hire this year.

A report by recruiters Hudson noted that 41 percent of 383 employers surveyed plan to increase headcount in the new year, while only 6 percent plan to reduce it. Majority (53 percent) just want to keep the status quo with the current headcount though.

"Employers are feeling confident enough to put hiring back on the agenda," said Hudson Singapore  Regional Director Emmanuel White. "It's positive to see that organisations are planning for growth. However, the more buoyant the economy, the harder it will be to attract people with the right skills and experience. In this market, there will be strong competition for talent".

As the threat of Islamic extremism looms ever closer with the recent bombings in Jakarta, Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam gave caution about the trend of Muslims in Singapore that refuse to stand together with the community.

The minister spoke of the issues concerning fundamentalism in his opening address yesterday at a two-day symposium organised by the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, TODAY reports.

He notes that the Muslim population here is growing "somewhat more distant" from the rest of society, with some believing that democracy is "incompatible with Islam".

This simulated attack upon Singapore couldn't have been more relevant these days, especially when an Islamic State-sanctioned attack just transpired in neighbouring Indonesia.

Over the last two days, the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force and other Home Team agencies conducted an island-wide exercise at various locations, involving over 1,800 personnel. The exercise was carried out to test the readiness of the Home Team forces in responding to multiple armed attacks — and by the looks of the captured highlights, they did just fine.

Laneway Festival Singapore

Last year's Laneway Festival may have garnered the biggest turnout ever in their five-year history, but the event did earn some stern words from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong too for being a total landfill.

The overwhelming amount of trash left behind on the lush landscapes of The Meadow post-festival were of wasteland levels, prompting PM Lee to express his disappointment at the legions of hipsters. He even compared their actions to an AFF Suzuki Cup match where Myanmar sports fans cleaned up after themselves by picking up the litter left behind at the National Stadium.
