24-year-old full-time national serviceman Chia Wee Kiak, who suffered brain damage due to an accident at the OCBC Cycle Singapore event, has died.
Chia, who has been in the Intensive Care Unit of Singapore General Hospital (SGH) ever since undergoing surgery, succumbed to his injuries yesterday morning.
The avid cyclist with over three years of experience, was participating in his first OCBC Cycle event — in the 59km Super Challenge — when he got thrown off his bike while going down the steep Bejamin Sheares bridge towards Tanjong Rhu at about 5:30am.
In a statement, event organisers Spectrum Worldwide and OCBC expressed their "deepest condolences to the family" and "will continue to extend all the support needed to Mr Chia’s family in this very difficult time."
Investigations on how Chia's fateful accident happened are still ongoing.
In light of the sad and unfortunate incident, event participants have expressed concern over the safety and precautionary measures taken by organisers during the event.
Many agree that more could've been done to prevent not only Chia's accident, but the multiple other crashes which occured during the cycling challenge.
Frederic Gillant, who witnessed a "mass crash of 10 cyclists" suggested having more marshals on tricky portions of the course, like the "narrow, dual-direction portion of east coast" and the "bottom of the descent of Tanjong Rhu flyover" where speeds can easily reach a dangerous 60km/h.
