The prevalence of excessive drinking has increased over the years, especially among teens and those in their 20s. 18.7 per cent of men and 12.2 per cent of women in Singapore aged 18 to 29 binge drink, which is defined as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks in one session for women, and five or more for men. The liver is capable of regenerating, but it can only take so much damage.
As reported in The Straits Times, counsellors at the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS), Singapore’s largest addiction treatment centre, saw 433 new cases compared to 415 cases a year earlier. Former chief of the Institute of Mental Health’s addiction medicine department Dr. Munidasa Winslow now sees two to three new cases of alcohol abuse a week, as compared to one case a week four years ago.
According to Dr. Winslow, many begin drinking in their 20s when they earn their first disposable income. What’s worse is when some alcoholics mix booze with other drugs like sleeping pills to achieve “ a multiplier effect”, often waking up in a terrible hangover but there are instances when they will never awake from their slumber.
Chemistry tells us that alcohol is a solution, but that doesn’t mean it should be applied to all problems.
