For its new landmark exhibition slated for April next year, the National Gallery Singapore will be collaborating with France’s prestigious Centre Pompidou to showcase more than 200 artworks, with half of these on loan from the latter. Art enthusiasts might finally catch a glimpse of works of modern art masters such as Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kadinsky and Marc Chagall hanging alongside those of their Southeast Asian counterparts such as Georgette Chen and Galo Ocampo.
This show will be jointly curated by the two institutions, under an exhibition agreement inked on Thursday, building on the strong cultural relations between Singapore and France. The Centre is home to one of the most significant modern and contemporary art collections in the world, and the new exhibition will be staged at the National Gallery’s newly announced 20,000 sq ft Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery. The show has yet to be titled, but it had better not be anything remotely close to the name of the gallery that it will be staged in.
According to Channel NewsAsia, Singapore's Minister of State for Culture, Commmunity and Youth Sam Tan said: "This collaboration between Singapore's National Gallery and France's Centre Pompidou will allow our art practitioners in both countries to engage and share expertise in the arts. We hope that through this collaboration with Centre Pompidou, our two institutions will find ways to share the arts with many more people in France and Singapore."
Who knows, the next art movement might very well start here in this little red dot.
