A week in jail for unlicensed forklift operator who reversed into friend twiceA freak accident involving a forklift has left 34-year-old T.Z. Yong so severely injured that he has to take painkillers every day and use a colostomy bag.  The man who caused the accident in the first place wasn't even licensed to drive the forklift that horribly rammed into Yong, fracturing his pelvis.  27-year-old Malaysian national Theenatayalan Ahumoolam has since been sentenced to a week in jail for causing the accident, The New Paper reports. In May last year, Theenatayalan — a driver at Gan Teck Kar Investment — was operating a forklift to help clear a bunch of pallets strewn on the loading and unloading bay at Amtech Building along Sin Ming Road, despite not being trained to do so.  After the job was done, he chatted with Yong, a fellow driver who worked at the same building as him, but for Wong Lye Packing Solutions.  Theenatayalan then made the unfortunate mistake of engaging the wrong gear and accidentally reversed the forklift into Yong, pinning him against a pillar. When he tried to move the forklift forward, he accidentally reversed into Yong again.  The forklift was eventually moved away, and he attended to the severely injured Yong. Later conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, doctors found him to have suffered and open fracture in his pelvis as well as other injuries in the lower half of his body. He had to undergo surgery by a bevy of specialists including radiologists, trauma surgeons, urologists and orthopaedic surgeons that same day.  Yong was eventually discharged two months later after all the treatment, and will still have to go for regular medical checkups. Altogether, his medical bills have accumulated up to $100,000 so far.  In court, Theenatayalan pleaded guilty to committing a negligent act that endangered the personal safety of others, and maintained that he did not have intention to hurt his friend.  Photo: Mike Mozart via Flickr
