The Land Transport Authority announced some distressing news for motorists here — over 75,000 vehicles in Singapore may potentially possess a fatal flaw in their airbag system.
Instead of saving your life during an accident, the safety system could very well kill you — the inflator module of at least 36 million vehicles around the world can propel shrapnel when the airbag is deployed, according to Japanese company Takata, which supplies a fifth of the world's airbags.
The Straits Times reports that six fatalities so far have been linked to the airbag system defect, along with over 100 injuries.
Dealerships in Singapore are figuring out the magnitude of the problem, and are still establishing the number of vehicles needing attention. Most of the affected models here would be Toyota and Honda vehicles.
According to the LTA, the potentially dangerous Toyota models include the Camry, Corolla, Picnic, RAV4, Vios and Yaris while the Honda models include the City, Civic, CR-V, Jazz and Stream. Nissan's Cefiro, Prairie, Presage, Sunny and X-trail are also among the models to be recalled.
Dealerships are awaiting the replacement parts from Takata to fix the issue.
