Tributes have already started pouring on from the various leaders of Singapore following the Mount Kinabalu quake last Friday, which has so far taken the lives of eight Singaporeans — six of which were 12-year-old students from Tanjong Katong Primary School.
The tragedy unfolded over the weekend as Malaysian rescuers recovered the bodies of the six students, as well as a teacher from the school and an adventure guide who accompanied them on their expedition.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has declared today as a Day of National Remembrance for the victims of the disaster, with all state flags on government buildings flying at half-mast and a minute of silence being observed at the beginning of the day at all SEA Games venues. The prime minister also thanked those involved in the rescue and recovery efforts in his Facebook post.
