As the second day of Amos Yee's trial takes place in state court today, it has been revealed why the 16-year-old feels strongly against religion, which led him to making offensive statements against Christianity in the first place.
Yee is currently facing charges for posting an obscene caricature of the late founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew and the late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher as well as content intended to wound the religious feelings of Christians through his blog and his YouTube channel.
In his statement to the police, admitted to court yesterday, Yee was aware that this critique of both Lee Kuan Yew and Christianity would be offensive, but he continued to carry it out to promote discussion, according to various media reports.
He himself experienced his brush of spiritual doubt in 2013, when he was kicked out as an altar boy in a Catholic church for swearing at a meeting. When he was about to be confirmed as a Catholic, he started to question the implications of his confirmation and started on a study of Catholicism and Christianity, while reading more about atheism, and soon stopped going to church altogether.
Earlier this year, Yee immersed himself in Singapore politics by looking into blogger Roy Ngerng's posts about income inequality and CPF issues, as well as having discussions with members of the Singapore Democratic Party. The book Lee Kuan Yew: The Man and His Ideas and his subsequent death, as well as the torrential outpouring of grief soon gave him clarity on his views of the founding prime minister.
Despite the hate-filled messages and death threats he received following the publication of his infamous video, he felt glad that it opened a "larger avenue for critical discussion towards Lee Kuan Yew, thus raising awareness to the inherent problems of Singapore," as reported by The Online Citizen.
Yee has refused to remove any of the videos he made, and stated that he is not remorseful for his actions.
