11 nabbed for operating island-wide remote gambling syndicateA remote gambling syndicate that had bases island-wide was busted by police on May 3. Nine men and two women were nabbed for their suspected involvement in the case.  The operation saw officers from the Criminal Investigation Department mounting simultaneous raids across Singapore, including Balestier, Hougang, Tiong Bahru, Tanjong Pagar, Newton and Woodlands. The police seized cash amounting to $215,000, an array of computers, mobile phones and other documents such as betting records and bank transaction record booklets.  Investigations revealed that the 11 suspects received illegal bets amounting to about $3 million in just the past two weeks. Yes, $3 million. The Remote Gambling Act was enacted in 2014 to tackle groups and individuals who profit from unlawful remote gambling, and the syndicate is said to be the first one to be investigated by the Singapore Police Force under the new act.  Should they be convicted, they face fines of up to $200,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years.  Photo: Singapore Police Force newsroom
