Has this former criminal monk redeemed himself? The Venerable Ming Yi — who was sentenced to jail in 2010 following a high-profile case — recently donated his kidney to stranger in need.
According to Shin Min Daily News, both the monk and the recipient of his kidney are recuperating well following the operation on Apr 27. Reportedly, the patient — who comes from a low-income family — has no idea who the monk is.
The 53-year-old Buddhist monk and former chief executive of Ren Ci Hospital had his name smeared all over the headlines back in 2009 after being found guilty of misappropriating the hospital's funds, falsifying accounts and giving false information to the Commissioner of Charities. Ming Yi was sentenced to serve six months in prison, but was released after serving four months for good behaviour.
He has kept a low profile since his release from prison, and is believed to be spending most of his time in Thailand and helping out at temples there. Prior to his conviction, he was known for performing televised death-defying stunts to raise funds for Ren Ci Hospital.
