As officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Armed Forces join the multi-national relief efforts assisting in earthquake-torn Nepal, 89 Singaporeans and Permanent Residents evacuated from the country made it back home early this morning.
Flying back home on C-130s by way of the Republic of Singapore Air Force, they were flown home yesterday afternoon from Kathmandu Airport and their plane touched down at Paya Lebar airbase at 12.30am today, Channel NewsAsia reports.
However, 10 people from Singapore are still listed as missing following the deadly earthquake that rocked Nepal on Apr 25 in what is considered to be the most powerful disaster to strike the country since 1934.
Those listed missing include Liang Kaixiang, Hunter Ong, Joanie Aw Yong, Janna Suairi, Justin Ong, Lek Kai Ming, Ngiam Li Lian, Regina Matara Kalusayakkarage, Sanjit and Tan Chi Keong.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has mentioned that they will be keeping in close contact with the Nepalese authorities and the next of kin of all Singaporeans in Nepal until they are all accounted for.
The death toll in Nepal has surpassed 4,800 as of today, while the country's Prime Minsiter Sushil Koirala has mentioned that it could very well reach 10,000. The Singapore Red Cross has reportedly received over $200,000 in donations from Singapore towards the effort.
