Drinking ban in public places Singapore Got a tip? Send it to us at singapore@coconuts.co. Where were you last night?  If, like many freedom-loving Singaporeans, you were out drinking in public last night, props to you for exercising your right to drink in peace outdoors — which by the way has became illegal just a few hours ago. It's called the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act and it has taken effect in Singapore. It bans public drinking and selling alcohol between 10.30pm and 7am — but you can still drink alcohol at home, licensed establishments (bars, restaurants and coffee shops with permits) and events that hold a consumption permit. You're also allowed "consumption of liquor in an emergency where the liquor is necessary to preserve life or prevent injury or further injury." Or at a "religious service, ceremony or rite lawfuly conducted by a priest or minister of religion in a place of worship.""Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean has also ordered the declaration of Geylang and Little India as Liquor Control Zones (LCZs) with effect from today," reports Laura Philomin in Today. The fine for establishments violating the bill can run up to $10,000. It's up to $1,000 for guilty consumers — and up to $2,000 and no more than three months in jail for repeat offenders. The ban for public drinking in these areas extend to the weekend (Saturday to Monday) and public holidays (eve of PH to the day after).   READ: 8 (not so) stupid questions about the alcohol ban in Singapore) Oddly, one of the few allowed places to drink in Singapore is while having barbeque in a national park. "You do not need to apply for a separate Consumption Permit, as long as you have applied for a Barbeque Permit from NParks. Persons attending a barbeque, with a valid NParks Barbeque Permit, are allowed to consume liquor beyond 10.30 pm. Consumption of liquor is allowed during the duration of the validity of the Barbecue Permit," according to the Singapore Police Force website. You can book an NParks BBQ pit via the AXS machine.
