A huge blaze attacked the HDB block along Ho Ching Road in the early hours of yesterday morning, forcing residents to evacuate their flats.
The New Paper reported that a fire had broken out at a third-storey unit of the block in Jurong around 1am, causing a power blackout and puffing thick black smoke to the units above.
A fifth-storey resident who spoke to the paper mentioned that the smoke and heat completely smothered the fifth floor, and rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) had to help the residents find their way out to the central stairwell.
SCDF personnel broke through the burning unit's window before entering the house to evacuate the two occupants inside. A 40-year-old man was found unconscious and suffered serious burns to his body, while a 70-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation. Both were conveyed to the National University Hospital (NUH).
More than 100 residents evacuated to the grass patch below as the watched firefighters put out the fire, which reportedly involved contents in the living room.
Another blaze occurred at another block nearby along Ho Ching Road later on in the afternoon at 4.55pm, where SCDF personnel extinguished a fire from a fourth-storey unit. A man in his 40s was taken to NUH for smoke inhalation.
