The process that began in 2010 when the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts commissioned a feasibility study on the Singapore Botanic Gardens as a Unesco World Heritage Site will have a result in a few months. The bid could receive a yes, no, or maybe by July 2015. If yes, then cheers, it will be joining the ranks of Italy's Orto Botanico, UK's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Australia's Carlton Gardens."Singapore submitted the nomination in January last year. A technical assessor from the International Council on Monuments and Sites then visited the Gardens as part of the bid evaluation process in September," reports Channel News Asia. Icomos is the first step. If they liked what they saw, they'll recommend the Botanic Gardens to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, comprised of 21 countries, who will meet by early July to decide on the matter."However, the Committee could also defer its decision and request more information from Singapore, in which case, the bid will be discussed at future World Heritage Committee Sessions," adds the report. The Botanic Gardens has been around far longer than #SG50; it was established in 1859 and occupies 74 hectares of land. "It showcases more than 10,000 types of plants, including the region's most significant living collection of documented palms, orchids and gingers. Its landscape has been well preserved since the 19th century, and includes Singapore's earliest ornamental designed lake," according to The Straits Times. If successful, the Gardens becomes Singapore's first World Heritage Site. But it won't be the first for Asean. Indonesia has 14 properties listed as heritage sites (including Borobudur's temples and Sumatra's tropical rainforest), Malaysia has two (Malacca and Georgetown), Laos has two (Luang Prabang and Vat Phou), the Philippines has nine (including Tubbataha Reefs and Cordillera Rice Terraces) and Thailand has five (including the historic city of Ayutthaya).
