Government agencies cooking up regulations for drones amidst soaring popularity Drones — the modern man's RC toy — has monumentally increased in popularity worldwide following affordable prices and better technology and in Singapore, it's no different.  TODAY reports that applications to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) weighing less than 7kg leaped six-fold last month according to Senior Minister of State (Transport) Josephine Teo.  Speaking in Parliament yesterday, she stated that around 70 to 80 percent of the 70 applications were approved, while the rest were rejected for safety reasons.  Regarding privacy concerns that has been raised concerning drones, incidents where a person is found prying into another person's property and privacy using them will be assessed on a case by case basis. As no law exist that pinpoints penalties when it comes to personal UAVs, enforcement action will be taken against the person carrying out activities which constitute an offence under existing laws such as the Penal Code.  Since the burgeoning popularity of these personal drones, the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and other agencies have started a review of the regulatory framework, and assess if there's a need to register and limit their usage.  Photo: Richard Unten via Flickr
