Hackers break into NYP database system, steal bank details of former studentsCybercrime is an increasingly serious reality that Singapore's currently facing (prompting the establishment of Interpol's digital crime centre and the Cyber Security Agency), and the threat has become even real-er today — the database system for Nanyang Polytechnic's former students have been hacked, and bank details were stolen.  Channel NewsAsia reports that around 240 former Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) students have been affected by the security breach. The students — mainly comprised of those from the '94 to '99 batches — were informed about the incident through a letter sent by NYP, stating that the hacker gained access into the system through a security loophole in the database.  Surprisingly, the school had learnt of a possible unauthorised access as early as Jan 14, and investigations were immediately carried out. The information stolen include student admission number, names and numbers of bank accounts of those who utilized the GIRO payment scheme for school fees.  According to the letter, the school had managed to delete the information from a website that posted the leaked information. The loophole has been patched with no other systems found compromised.  NYP is reportedly working with a forensics firm to conduct independent investigations and are looking to step up protection of their systems.  Photo: Wikimedia Commons
