Haze period could hit Singapore much earlier this yearAs the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) continue to slowly climb to moderate levels, some experts predict that the haze could appear much earlier this year.  Following the steady increase in PSI over the last couple of days along with the imminent dry phase of the north-east monsoon, experts speaking to The Straits Times remarked that the haze could arrive earlier should the dry weather in Malaysia trigger wildfires and winds carry the smoke over to Singapore.  Singapore's hazy period usually occurs from May to October due to the forest fires in Sumatra, Indonesia, where farmers practice open burning to clear the land for agricultural use.  Reportedly, the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre observed a few hot spots in Peninsular Malaysia and Kalimantan as of yesterday.
