Geylang's red-light district will no longer host any more new residential developments, because its not exactly known for its welcoming vibes, family-friendly environments and wholesome ambience.
TODAY reports that the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has proposed the rezoning of the infamous locale, ensuring no further residential projects in the area, with current residents constantly complaining about the noise, fights, traffic problems and other uplifting issues that come together when you live in an area with high concentrations of vice.
Existing housing developments and upcoming projects that have already been approved will still be carried out.
The URA has marked Lorongs 4 to 22 as the area to be rezoned, as the district is mostly commercial anyway. Troubles and frustrations only ensue when the growth of new housing developments lead to increasing clashes of interest between residents and the unsavoury yet necessary businesses conducted there.
Most of the residents there speaking to TODAY expressed their aversion to the various illegal activities — cough syrup consumption, gambling, loitering, street brawls — taking place in their neighbourhoods that have become a common sight daily. But hey, that's life in the red-light district.
