Photos of a kitten used as "hantaran" are making their rounds online, sparking fury among cat lovers. "Hantaran" is a form of dowry practised by the Malay community, comprising first and foremost cash, but which may also include trays of offerings such as artwork and fashion accessories.
In the photos shared by several Facebook pages including '"Yishun 326 Tabby cat", the kitten can be seen contained in a decorated purple cage, sitting among the other "hantaran" trays in front of the bridal dais.
The post by the aforementioned page has already had 90 shares and about 50 comments, mostly criticising the mere concept of giving animals away as presents.
Others think the fault is with containing the cat in a cage and placing it in the distressing wedding environment for the sake of a showcase.
Yet another group of people see absolutely nothing wrong with the situation and has filed it under "another day, another opportunity for Singaporeans to blow things out of proportion".
