The residents of Bukit Batok will have one more reason to celebrate the season when the rat infestation gets cleared just in time for Christmas.
Five days into the operation to exterminate the massive population of rats that has boomed in the vicinity of Bukit Batok MRT station, the infestation is now under control. Pest controllers have moved into the forested area to hunt down the remaining population of vermin, Channel NewsAsia reports. Over 170 rats have been caught so far.
Though showers have delayed the endeavor, the first phase of the operation is expected to be completed by Christmas Day, when all the rats would have been flushed out from their burrows.
To prevent further unhygienic hazards, the dead rats are sprayed with insecticide to kill fleas, which carry diseases. They are then disposed properly by pest controllers.
In the second phase of the operations, the exterminators will be installing surveillance devices inside the forested areas to continue monitoring the area and take action if needed.
