![Fandi Ahmad’s father and former national goalkeeper passes away]()
Just before a heart-rending showdown between Singapore and Malaysia that saw the Lions kicked out of the AFF Suzuki Cup, a sad tragedy befell the household of Singapore’s favourite football son Fandi Ahmad, whose father died on Saturday morning.
Ahmad Wartam, a former national goalkeeper was 79 when he passed, after spending a month in hospital in the Intensive Care Unit, according to a Facebook post by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).
“Our deepest sympathies are with Fandi's family and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult period,” FAS wrote on the morning of the match.
Channel NewsAsia reported that several Members of Parliament including Law Minister K. Shanmugam and Seng Han Thong paid their respects at Ahmad’s home in Ang Mo Kio.
Football fans from all over have poured their support and prayers for Ahmad and recall the legacy he left behind, along with two generations of footballing talent.
