A $20,000 wedding banquet took place last Saturday at a five-star Sentosa hotel, but with an unfortunate twist — only the groom was present throughout the whole night.
Cold feet? Not really — it was the groom that called off his wedding the day before due to a violent altercation with his fiancee that left him with bruises all over his body. Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, he mentioned that the couple got into an intense argument a week before the banquet, which escalated quickly into a one-sided brawl. Reportedly, she slapped the groom several times, bruising his shoulder and chest.
What makes the issue even more prickly is the fact that she is four to five months pregnant with his child.
Calling off the wedding may have been the right choice, but it came at the cost of $20,000 and losing face in front of relatives and in-laws.
The groom continued to entertain guests and family at the banquet, but three to four tables were noticeable empty — believed to have been reserved for the bride’s guests. He even bowed in apology to guests on Saturday and read out an apology letter to them. All red packets received from the guests have been donated to charity.
Shin Min Daily also reported the bride’s side of the story; she mentioned her difficulty with her future in-laws, unstable hormonal imbalances and lack of rest attributing to her violent outburst.
The groom however is not giving up on the relationship — he wants to take her for counselling sessions so she can better control her emotions. Despite all the hullaballoo, a wedding ceremony is still in the plans.
