A showdown between the residents of Buangkok estate and the authorities took place over the weekend in a conflict for the lives of stray dogs in the neighbourhood.
The Real Singapore reports that the police had to be called in to mediate the stand-off when residents actively prevented Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) officers from trapping stray dogs and putting them to sleep.
Even though the neighbourhood feeders had been taking care of dogs for many years, AVA took action against the strays after numerous complaints. Last week, officers were seen setting up traps and cages to catch the animals.
According to The Real Singapore, residents have been hard at work making sure that the stray dogs aren’t captured — some have been taking leave from work and staying up late into the night to fend off AVA’s attempts.
Already, 16 dogs have been caught in the area. Out of those, four have been put down.
Adding fuel to the fire, dog lovers in the area have also been up in arms over AVA’s actions in recent times, including an incident where 10 puppies caught by the authority were separated from their mother.
The tense stand-off last Saturday took place over two hours, with police getting called in to calm down the two parties.
AVA insists that they were merely responding to complaints from other residents. A spokesperson has even mentioned that obstruction the duties of the officers is an offence, and carries a punishment of imprisonment up to a year and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
