As part of the ‘Safer Roads Singapore’ action plan, traffic cameras are going fully digital by next year, in an enhancement that will take their vigilance 24/7.
A total of 240 of such cameras will be installed by next June, Today reports. Currently, only half have already made the switch to digital. The other half still shoot errant drivers by film.
The new cameras will be able to produce pictures with higher definition, and will be operational around the clock. The older traffic cameras occasionally run out of film.
According to the Traffic Police, a total of 39 fatalities occurred over the past 4 years due to motorists beating the red light. The newer traffic cameras should be able to assist in the reduction of these cases.
