Between April and July 2013, three workers knowingly made false claims about work-related accidents. They've since been charged with four to six weeks of imprisonment under the Work Injury Compensation Act (WICA).
During investigations by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), officers found that workers Billal Hossain Kader Molla, Govindan Raja and Khan Momen had lied about their injuries and weren't eligible to seek compensation from their employers under the act.
The WICA reimburses workers who've hurt themelves due to work-related activities with a cheaper and faster alternative to settle compensation claims as compared to common law.
Mr. Woon Cheng Peng, Deputy Director of MOM's Work Injury Compensation department, says, "MOM will not hesitate to take tough action against fraudulent claimants who abuse the system for their own gains. Similarly, MOM will also take firm action against errant employers who failed to fulfil their WICA obligations”.
