The High Court has made revisions to its sentencing benchmarks for various vice-related crimes, after mastermind of online vice ring Poh Boon Kiat, appealed against his nine-month jail sentence based on eight charges, according to Today.
Those who pimp, receive and house prostitutes will no longer face fines only — if found guilty, they will receive a jail term. This includes offenders living on 'immoral earnings'.
Along with that amendment, the court will now use the entire sentencing range to determine the appropriate punishment. This may lead to heavier sentences for each offence. Fines may be imposed where culprits might have profited.
Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon, who headed the revision, described the precedents as inaccurate judgements for they were done "without considering the provision in its textual as well as legislative context". He also added that the whole range of sentences set by Parliament usually wasn't used in cases of individual vice-related offences.
