Online retail platform Streetdeal Singapore has been fined a total of $25,000 for operating as a travel agent without a valid licence, while also assisting another unlicensed travel agent with business.
According to a press release by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Streetdeal has been convicted of 16 charges under the Travel Agents Act and Regulations. During a regular enforcement check by the STB, Streedeal was found to be carrying on the business of a travel agent despite choosing not to renew their Travel Agents licence, which expired from the beginning of last year and repeated warnings.
Additionally, they were also found to have advertised and sold travel packages offered by AbsolutInspira, another unlicensed travel agent.
The Travel Agents licence applies to Singapore-based online deal portals —such as Groupon — which advertise, collect and hold money for travel packages on behalf of travel agents.
“The STB adopts a serious view against errant travel agents and will not hesitate to take necessary actions to protect consumers' interests and safeguard the reputation of Singapore's tourism sector”, the press release states.
