38-year-old Zainal Ariffin Selamat has been given a two-year mandatory treatment order following an attempt to rape a woman in her Marina Bay Sands Hotel room, The Straits Times reports.
Zainal, who suffers from schizophrenia, suffered a relapse on Christmas Day last year, and had found himself wandering aimlessly in the hotel lobby.
That was when he saw the 28-year-old victim carrying her luggage and followed her into the lift, offering to carry her bags for her.
When she opened the door to her room, Zainal grabbed her and pushed her into the room. She screamed for her boyfriend, who came out of the bathroom and gave chase, eventually detaining the fleeing suspect.
Zainal then admitted to police that he had intended to have sex with the woman even if she had been unwilling.
