The annual Y2K International Live Looping Festival is about to make its Singapore debut at the Artistry cafe and art gallery from Sept. 25 to Sept. 27, featuring 20 local and international acts.
The festival’s focal point is music created by way of live looping technology - equipment that records and plays back sound, to which other sounds can be added, layered and mixed to form an improvisational work on the spot. The technique can be applied across various genres including ambient, electronic, hip-hop, indie-pop and more.
The three-day festival will showcase 13 Singaporean acts including Cultural Medallion Young Artist Award recipient Bani Haykal, experimental Chinese instrument outfit SA Trio, and local live looping icon Randolf Arriola, who is the founder of the Live Loop Asia online community and the festival’s director. International live looping artists include Japan’s Mandoman Hideki, Germany’s Thorsten Vieth and Thailand’s Kasemsmai Wongchayasilpa.
The Y2k International Live Looping Festival was first held at California in 2001, and this year will mark its 14th iteration. The Y2K14 International Live Loop Asia Festival Singapore is the first time the event is held in Asia.
Admission to all three days are free; stay up to date on the festival on the official website.
