Singapore-based film director Tan Pin Pin’s latest work To Singapore, With Love has been classified as “Not Allowed For Ratings” by the Media Development Authority (MDA).
The decision came after the authorities found the film’s content to have distorted the rationale behind rightful clauses of security agencies meant to protect the nation’s security and stability.
Several individuals featured in the film claimed that they were denied re-entry to Singapore under unfair circumstances, when in actuality, they had committed criminal offences — like participating in the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM), tampering Singapore passports and escaping their National Service responsibilities — that they were supposed to be held accountable for, but had fled from.
To Singapore, With Love has already begun making its rounds in the international film circuit — in the past six months only, the docudrama has shown in Indonesia, India, Malaysia and South Korea, and has even picked up Best Asean Documentary and Best Director awards.
