Chinatown today may be a seamless hybrid between old-world charm and yuppie watering holes, but back in the '60s it was straight up old-school as seen in this rare 35mm film footage by archivists Kinolibrary.
While the Vietnam War dragged on and mankind made their first trip to the moon, Singapore looks elegantly serene, with citizens ambling along about their business, concerned only about their own affairs. See if you can spot how a policeman looked like back then and how there’s a surreal absence of buildings more than four storeys tall. With locals setting up their wares along the road and trishaws cruising around as the most commonly used public transport, it all feels like the stories from our Social Studies textbooks came to life.
