Someone finally got it right.
Looking in, modern-day Singapore seems like it has everything.
But if there's any one time that the city needs to feel passion and patriotism, it is now.
In terms of harsh political and identity issues we've had to deal with blow after blow — if we had to put it figuratively it's been downhill since the Little India riot in December last year. We've had run-ins with three different kinds of phobias — Islamo-, homo, xeno — and in the last eight months an increasing number of people have been aggressive in voicing their displeasure toward the government.
The desire to witness something soul-stirring is especially apparent in the reactions that have followed the high-profile collateral that's been floating around, including last year's #majorfail National Day theme song and the internal Young PAP video that somehow got circulated.
Peeps are in dire need of something heart-warming. And thank goodness, they're getting it this National Day.
This video mash-up featuring an old National Day Parade (NDP) song "One People One Nation" feeds its nostalgia-loving viewers, and takes care to promote concepts of inclusion and diversity.
Love.
Happy birthday, Singapore.
