Henderson Waves

There's been much hype about Equals— the latest sci-fi/romance flick soon to hit theatres — ever since its young Hollywood stars Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult dropped by Singapore for filming.

All that hype went up in flames when it premiered at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival to largely meh reviews. Having the two stars act in a futuristic domain devoid of emotions (hey, that's exactly like Singapore!) didn't impress critics that much, with many calling the movie stylish and pretty, but generic and dull.

Changi Airport staffers had their Monday morning blues dispelled by a man who climbed on top of a check-in counter and refused to go down.

The hullaballoo started at 9am at Terminal 3, when a 32-year-old Vietnamese man clambered up the roof of the counter and stood there with his umbrella and two packed cardboard boxes. A witness speaking to Shin Min Daily News mentioned that the agitated man then took off his shirt and waved his umbrella at the airport and police officers, who were coaxing him to stop his nonsense.

Melbournian tourist Charlotte Corday was on hand to provide live updates and commentary on the whole folderol.

PM Lee heart

It's already been four years since Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong got his social media game face on. Four years since he (or rather, his PR team) started putting up pictures of his adventures, PM Lee's pretty much en fleek as a politician online, accumulating over a million fans on Facebook and over 302,000 on Twitter.

In the typically dated style reserved for Singapore's politicians and dads who do #dadjokes, he (or rather his unhip PR team again), celebrated the milestone with a photo montage.

It's springtime at The White Rabbit, where seasonal dishes have been introduced to the weekday set lunch menu. For appetisers, try the grilled octopus leg, a sustainably farmed octopus sous vide for three hours and served with a tangy pimiento piquillo purée. Or the sautéed foie gras with a yuzu reduction and nashi pear pickled in yuzu syrup.

In a scuba diving session gone horribly wrong, a Singaporean woman was found dead in the waters of Gili Lawa in Indonesia's Komodo National Park.

27-year-old certified autonomous diver Neo Qiu Ping Vera was first reported missing on Sunday after failing to return from scuba diving in the popular diving spot in the West Manggarai Regency.

Neo had been diving with 10 other people, reported Indonesian news publication Pos Kupang, setting out for the dive site on Saturday on a cruise boat. Following a diving session at 5pm the next day, everyone else in the group returned to the boat except for Neo, who was the only one who hadn't surfaced.

The boat's captain waited at hour before alerting the authorities — but as it was already dark, search-and-rescue operations could only begin on Monday morning.

Expect heavy traffic at land checkpoints over the Labour Day long weekend

heavy traffic

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority has warned people to expect heavy traffic flow at both Woodlands and Tuas land checkpoints over the Labour Day long weekend. It's advisable that you do whatever you can to avoid leaving Singapore on Apr 29 and entering on May 2. (If you didn't already know that, welcome to Singapore. You must be new.)

Traffic build-up is inevitable with the hordes of people who usually descend upon the checkpoints over long weekends, so adjust your plans or you'll have to endure hours of waiting. Plus, with the implementation of the BioScreen system to capture thumbprints of arriving and departing visitors, things might take a little longer.

Out of all the tips from the ICA, which include maintaining lane discipline, this one's probably the most useful: car-pool. And, of course, don't forget your passport.

Another long weekend beckons with a well-deserved off-day this coming Monday — but unfortunately the folks running our train and bus systems will be toiling extra hours before Labour Day. Gotta give props where deserved, #blessup.

Both SBS Transit and SMRT will be extending the operating hours for their trains and selected bus services on the eve of Labour Day this Saturday. MRT services on the North East Line, Downtown Line, North-South Line and East-West Line will have last trains depart after midnight. The Circle Line's operating hours will end slightly earlier, while the Bukit Panjang LRT will have rails running beyond 1am.

Prices of Malaysian-grown vegetables sold in Singapore to soar amidst scorching temperatures

If you think we're having it hard with the withering weather, farmers across the Causeway are having it way harder as they grapple with both working under the intense heat and crummy harvests.

Vegetables grown in Malaysia have seen reduced stocks as the hot and dry climate parched farms with temperatures in some places hitting over 37°C, Channel NewAsia reports. As a result, Malaysian-grown produce imported into Singapore will be seeing increased prices as supplies look set to drop by about 30 percent in the weeks to come.

Already, prices of greens such as chye sim, spinach and xiao bai cai in wet markets here have gone up — even doubling in some cases.

A man suffering from intermittent explosive disorder was sent to cool off in jail for a year after two pretty horrible incidents that involved him being a violent jackass.

28-year-old Gabriel Kok Khen Foon appeared in court yesterday to face sentencing for repeatedly hitting a man on his face using a metal dustbin cover in 2012, The Straits Times reports. He received an additional week in jail for causing hurt by poking a lighted cigarette into a motorist's upper lip along the Central Expressway (CTE) during a traffic altercation in 2014.

Things heated up this afternoon at Keming Primary School as the battle for the position of power in Bukit Batok SMC is confirmed to be fought between the People's Action Party's (PAP) Murali Pillai and the Singapore Democratic Party's (SDP) Dr Chee Soon Juan.

Nominations closed at noon today and party flags were unfurled as both candidates took stage and addressed their supporters after over a month walking the grounds and meeting with constituents.

The day was not without controversy. Yesterday, SDP took issue with the fact that Murali had unveiled a $1.9 million worth of infrastructure upgrading plans for a neighbourhood — but only "if we are returned at the by-election", the PAP candidate said.

Panic at the disco

It's been eight years since theatrical emo-punk troupe Panic! At the Disco last brought their quirky alt-rock tunes to Singapore, and they faded away from our radars along with our guyliners, leather wristbands and mopey haircuts.

Like all of us who outgrew that era, the group has matured as well — or rather just Panic! At the Disco helmsman Brendan Urie. Now sporting newer elements of electronic music, synthpop and extra polish (without losing his idiosyncratic croons), Urie strikes out on his own with Death of a Bachelor, the band's fifth studio album.

Laugh die you

It's a battle of wits, as Singaporean and Malaysian stand-up comedians circle one another on the stage of Laugh Die You — The Karaoke. Originally debuting in Malaysia, the popular show combines music, dance and comedy for a fascinating performance.

Familiar faces to watch out for include Kumar and Gurmit Singh, whose new persona is Hero Singh, an upright, law-abiding Punjabi security guard who's a mix of eccentric and flamboyant. There's also Joanne Kam repping our neighbours across the Causeway — she'll be taking on Kumar to see who elicits the most laughs, while Singh moderates (and occasionally bursts into song).

The police have announced today that the rallies may be held from Apr 28 till May 7 in the hours between 7am and 10pm at the two designated sites: Bukit Gombak Stadium and the field along Bukit Batok Industrial Park A.

As usual, large crowds are expected at the election meetings, and motorists travelling within the vicinity should be prepared for traffic diversions or lane closures. Parking is not allowed along periphery roads, and so are your drones.

All of us have been in that situation before. We come home from an overseas trip with left over foreign currency in our pockets that were unused.

If the foreign currencies were from a country we visit often (e.g. Malaysia, Thailand), we would usually keep it with us till we next visit the country. But what if the currency was from a place we would not be visiting anytime soon? What do we do with the left over currency?
