An official trip to New York as a dignitary isn't complete without paying respects to the victims of the city's most catastrophic attack — the September 11 terrorist attacks.

A visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum was made as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife laid flowers on ground zero, now a fountain and a reflecting pool. Lee also checked out the underground museum which stores over 10,000 artifacts from the day of the attacks, including steel from the Twin Towers.

In a rather befuddling piece by The Straits Times, an expat couple earning a combined monthly income of $29,000 lament about struggling to get by in Singapore's expensive environment — despite making 10 times more of what a degree holder might earn these days. But hey, what do we know, we're not expats.

We've never been one to turn down complimentary drinks. If they keep on comin', even better. But daily free flow deals at the best bars in town? That's like a whole other level.

All you gotta do is sign up for a membership with The Drinking Society. The way this new concept works is simple. Once you're in with the cool crowd, you'll receive daily invitations to two-hour free flow deals at different bars across the island. RSVP to the offer, and you'll get unlimited booze on the house for that night.

For $80, you can buy a one-month 'newbie' membership; $210 gets you a three-month 'rebel' one, and a six-month 'weekend warrior' pass costs $360. Or you can go all out and hand over $600 for the one-year 'drunken yoda'.

Dallas Restaurant and Bar

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — 10 years is a pretty legit duration for any restaurant can stay afloat in Singapore, where eateries simply come and go like stale breadsticks — but Dallas Restaurant & Bar gamely flourishes where others have failed.

Wallet-friendly, hearty American meals don't come as often as we want them to be, but Dallas manages. After 10 years of garnering a stellar reputation for its chill vibes and excellent grub at their bar along the Boat Quay strip, they've expanded to a second joint at the Suntec City Sky Garden. Higher in both elevation (with sweet sunset views of Marina Bay) and class (black marble tops, leather high-chairs), the new restaurant easily hosts up to 300 guests in their glasshouse-like digs.

MCE accident

Yesterday evening, a private bus collided with a tipper truck on the fifth lane of the Marina Coastal Expressway tunnel, in the direction of East Coast Parkway. A total of 28 people were injured, but no lives were lost.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force received a call at 6.17pm, and rushed down to free the bus driver from his vehicle using hydraulic rescue tools. The windscreen of the bus had shattered, and passengers were standing by the side of the expressway. As a result, two lanes were closed, causing a traffic build-up, and the wreckage was only cleared after 9pm.

It's only been a few months into the year and already our hazy days have been slowly seeping in once again as the 3-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) peaked at 87 yesterday night — the highest yet this year.

Though PSI levels tapered down slightly since the peak, the air quality hasn't let up, remaining on the high end of 'moderate' range since yesterday. According to the World Air Quality Index Project's real-time calculations, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) have even breached into the 'unhealthy' range as of writing.

An evening stroll on the LRT tracks? Why not, it'll be fun —  thought none of the weary, tired passengers who had to walk along the tracks when their train stalled last night in Sengkang.

Apparently, a train fault had caused the train to stop in between Sengkang station and Renjong station at 7pm, merely 200 metres away from the latter. SBS announced disruption of services on the Sengkang East and West (outer loop) around soon afterwards, while staff arrived at the stalled train 20 minutes after the breakdown, according to Channel NewsAsia. After failing to restart the train, the 30-odd passengers were asked to alight and escorted in the darkness towards Renjong station.

Club bouncer charged for punching a patron who called him fat

Don't call a bouncer fat. That's what 28-year-old Desmond Loh did when he and a friend were barred from re-entering Club Sonar at Orchard Hotel. The incident, which happened on May 3 last year, escalated into violence when bouncer Yeo Tian Soon, 20, failed to reign in his anger, as reported by The New Paper. He initially allowed the pair into the club, but then asked Loh to leave, and refused him re-entrance.

Loh reportedly made a couple snide remarks, telling him, "You're rejecting me entry 'cause you're fat." This provoked Yeo, who held a blue belt in taekwondo and often familiarized himself with self-defence videos.

Despite the inescapable association we hold between Takashimaya and Ngee Ann City (we can't imagine them ever being apart), rifts are emerging in public view as they drag each other to court over rent.

The Straits Times reports that the landlord of Ngee Ann City and its anchor tenant Takashimaya have gone to High Court in a legal tussle over a 2014 agreement on how rental rate is to be valued.

Local grocery delivery startup Honestbee jumped on the April Fool's bandwagon pretty early but the only ones who ended up looking like utter fools were totally themselves.

In a complete lack of tact and display of any well-intentioned message, Honestbee sent out a newsletter to their customers announcing the launch of their exotic meat store called Explorer Joe.

Jailed: Man who cheated supermarkets by printing his own fake barcode stickers

Barcode

This one's pretty crafty — a provision store owner with his own barcode label printer produced his own stickers and slapped them on items in supermarkets.

The result? Items scanned and paid for at the lowered price of his own choosing. Staff were none the wiser because he would utilise the self-checkout counters. You gotta admit, it's an artful con.

Celebrate your single status with free food in commemoration of Korea's Black Day

Ever heard of Black Day? The South Korean tradition, also known as Singles Day, is one of the country's most popular unofficial holidays. Celebrated on Apr 14, it's a time for singles to throw on black threads and dine on jjajangmyeon (that's Korean black bean sauce noodles, for the uninitiated).

JINJJA Chicken's jjajangmyeon

It sounds kinda dark, if you ask us. We're picturing thousands of heartsick single Koreans, dressed in dull garb from head-to-toe, drowning their sorrows in bowls of carbs. Y'know, misery loves company and all. Unless there are those anti-Valentine's Day types who abhor lovey-dovey displays and commemorate the day ironically.

In yet another corporate attempt to capture the attention and loose cash of the millennial market, United Overseas Bank (UOB) has launched a new credit card that's decidedly #hip and #fresh — the YOLO card.

Generation Y (those born roughly between 1981 to 2000, give or take) is the name of the game for UOB, who predict that they'll be the ones dominating consumer spending the the near future.

"Millennial spending currently accounts for 20 per cent of UOB’s total card spend and one in three millennials in Singapore currently banks with UOB," said the bank's managing director and regional head of cards and payments Jacquelyn Tan.

The folks behind Timbre Group have always offered us cool hangouts, complete with good food and great music. Now, they've got something new up their sleeve, and it's set to debut on Apr 1. The mammoth undertaking is a 24,000 sq ft gastropark featuring 35 restaurants and new-gen hawker stalls. Formerly an old food centre, the space has been rebuilt (by JTC) to fit 700 people for lunch, dinner and after-hours drinks.

As for the decor of the place, think high ceilings, shipping containers splashed with graffiti art, and vintage Airstream travel trailers transformed into food trucks. Timbre residents will also be making appearances here — expect familiar names like The Common People, Sweatshop Jam, Supersonic and OK Ready! to take the stage with funky tunes. Plus, look out for upcoming events like pop-up markets, chef collabs, BBQ cook-offs and festivals.
