25 funky pianos are scattered across Singapore - can you find them all?

Piano

This is like music to our ears — 25 pianos dotting the streets of Singapore, all free for public use. Besides the usual cacophony of honking cars, chirping birds and incessant chatter, now we can look forward to the sweet sounds of maestros playing their best Beethoven symphony. Or, um, kids and amateurs assaulting the keys with wild abandon. It could go either way, really.

But the 'Play Me, I'm Yours' movement has good intentions. Part of a travelling artwork by Brit artist Luke Jerram, the Singapore edition is a collab between 25 artists and 25 social enterprises and social welfare organisations.

Passed! Amended Tobacco Bill to take effect next year

The latest version of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Bill was passed in Parliament today and it is expected to literally blow away the nicotine delivery industry for good when it is implemented after a year.

The Tobacco Act — in place since 1993 and last revised in 2011— bans advertisements, promotions and sponsorships relating to tobacco products and their use.

Under the changes, commercial establishments will be required to keep tobacco products hidden from view in storage areas so they won't be visible to non-smokers, especially the youth. When a customer asks for the price of a tobacco product, the seller may present a text-only version, without the brand's packaging or logo.

Causeway jam app

For anyone who's made the drive from Singapore to Johor Bahru and back, you'll know what it feels like to be stuck in a jam for hours, waiting impatiently as cars slow to a crawl. You've probably wondered, "there must be more to life than mindlessly sitting around."

Well, help has finally arrived. In the form of a web app that tracks traffic at the Causeway and Second Link to provide drivers with live updates on the waiting times at both queues. It also shows up-to-date snapshots from road cameras and charts each day's progress against that from a week ago, so you can see when the peak periods are and (hopefully) avoid them.

What is World Sleep Day, you ask? No, it's not a day off work where everyone gets to stay home and catch up on some much-needed shut-eye (we wish). It's an annual event on Mar 18 that promotes good sleep and aims to raise awareness on sleep disorders and problems that can pose a threat to your body's health.

Basically, sleep deprivation isn't ideal. It's not new; it's something we've heard thousands of times before. But just how bad is it?

Debris, blood and glass smashed to smithereens — that was the aftermath of the collision between a white lorry and a blue ComfortDelgro taxi. As reported by The New Paper, the lorry driver was attempting to turn right when he ended up banging into the side of the cab.

The crash was deafening enough that two guys on the 22nd storey heard it. A destroyed front bumper and headlight was all the damage the lorry endured, while the taxi had a door dislodged and its entire right side slammed inwards.

The police said a call came in around 8.45pm on Sunday to inform them of the accident, which occurred at the junction of Boon Lay Way and Jurong Town Hall Road.

Since the resignation of Member of Parliament David Ong last weekend, Singapore will undergo its third by-election in four years. Up for grabs is Ong's vacated seat for the Bukit Batok Single-Member Constituency, and opposition parties have wasted no time in declaring their decision to contest the ward.

Players who've thrown their name into the ring include the Singapore Democratic Party and the Democratic Progressive Party, with others like the National Solidarity Party and the People's Power Party undecided as of yet, according to The Straits Times.

These Singapore postcards are supposed to keep you away from drugs

Anti-drug poster

We all know Singapore's stance on drugs. Just as well as we know our reputation as a nanny state. But that didn't stop us from chuckling when we spotted these slightly morbid anti-drug postcards on Twitter attributed to Singapore.

Apparently, the educational materials came in a pack of seven, and originated from a 2004 game called 'Don't Get Nabbed!' designed by an ad agency called WORK, with illustrations by Theseus Chan and words by Jim Aitchison. Created for the Partnership for a Drug Free Singapore programme, the cards got distributed in schools, ostensibly to teach kids about the tragic consequences of narcotics.

Matthew Zachary Liu

Think back to your school days — were there any important moments that helped shape who you are today? And did any of them involve an encounter with a teacher?

For a particular Secondary One Normal Academic class, the breakthrough they experienced was a result of the love and care showed by their teacher, Matthew Zachary Liu. He saw what was happening among the students, how much hostility and resentment they had towards one another, and decided to put aside the books to find the root of the problem.

Get your umbrellas out, people. This month will be a hot one, reports TODAY. According to the National Environment Agency on Tuesday, maximum temperatures for the next two weeks will fluctuate between 33 and 34 degrees, with some days shooting up to a high of 36 degrees.

Aren't we so lucky to live in sunny Singapore?

You can thank the El Nino phenomenon for the sweltering heat — it's going to be dry and hot, with less rainfall than usual. Or blame it on the equinox, a twice-yearly astronomical occurrence that happens when the plane of our equator passes through the sun's centre. The upcoming date is approximated to be Mar 20, when temperatures around noon will be sky high.

Sentosa beach

If you were taking a stroll along Tanjong Beach in Sentosa early yesterday morning, you might've seen a model and a photographer doing their jobs. But this was no ordinary photo shoot — it was a nude one. And Singapore doesn't look too kindly on indecent exposure (offenders can be fined up to $2,000 or jailed for three months).

According to The New Paper, the model claimed her name was Lucille, and said she was a 33-year-old Brit here on holiday. The photographer, Dave, was a Singaporean friend helping to 'expand her work portfolio'.

Neither professed to intentionally defying the law.

The restaurant just recently added 11 new dishes to its menu. Two of those — grilled pork skewers and red curry of roast duck — are included in the $9++ promo, and you can also expect 19 more savoury dishes and four kinds of desserts. Six cocktails, plus Leo and Singha beers, are also a steal.
