David Beckham counts Singapore among his favourite places to visit
Despite obvious benefits, Singapore makes it really frickin' hard to drive Tesla Cars here
Tesla cars are one of the top inventions that prove that the future is now — but as a resident here learned, Singapore is not onboard with vehicles of tomorrow.
In a rather enlightening (but disheartening) interview with Stuff Singapore, IT professional Joe Nguyen revealed that driving Elon Musk's electric brainchildren is a rather onerous task. Being the only owner and driver of a beautiful Tesla Model S in the country didn't come without its challenges — he battled bureaucracy and red tape for a year before he could even take it out on the roads.
SIA's new A350 takes flight to Amsterdam next week in first long-haul journey
Come May 9, Singapore Airlines (SIA) will take flight with the first long-haul flight of their newly acquired Airbus fleet to the city of Amsterdam.
Their A350 will serve SIA's daily flights to and fro Amsterdam before the launch of future services to Dusseldorf in July. SIA will be needing a lot of folks manning their new fleet of 67 A350-900s on firm order — thus their aggressive expansion of cabin crews.
Seven of the aircrafts ordered will be ultra-long-range variants, which will be delivered in 2018, SIA says. They'll be used for the long-anticipated non-stop services from Singapore to the United States.
Police and SCDF fielded several calls over tremors; all buildings certified safe after inspections
You've probably felt the tremors yesterday night when a shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit the western coast of Sumatra. Though it was approximately 1,237 km away, residents in Bishan, Punggol, East Coast, Sengkang and Ang Mo Kio reportedly felt the ground shake — creating some panic among Singaporeans.
So significant were the tremors felt here that both the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) fielded several calls from the public. No reports of injury or "law and order" incidents were noted.
Coffee shop dishwasher poured corrosive concoction on friend for having "poor work attitude"
Just because he was deemed to be a bad worker, a 65-year-old coffee shop worker had his scalp, face, neck and chest chemically burned when a corrosive concoction was poured upon his back.
He spent 38 days in hospital and underwent multiple operations, and now will have to go for regular follow-up sessions at the plastic surgery clinic and the eye clinic. Already partially blinded by the shocking attack, he might even lose his sight completely.
All because 62-year-old Lim Yeow Heng wanted to teach him a lesson for having a "poor work attitude", Channel NewsAsia reports.
McDonald's Singapore launches yet another gourmet burger — the Crispy Chicken Sandwich
McDonald's Singapore is continuing their run of offering gourmand fare, and we're loving it. Even though their foray into hipster café classics was a mixed bag (their truffle fries were absolutely meh), they made it all up with a surprisingly piquant salmon burger.
To follow up their recent atas offering, McDonald's Singapore unveiled their Crispy Chicken Sandwich today, the latest in a limited series of new customer-inspired menu items.
3 remembrance sites to be set up ahead of the first anniversary since Lee Kuan Yew's death
This Mar 23 will mark the first anniversary of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's death, and already plans are being made to commemorate his legacy.
Three remembrance sites will be set up ahead of the anniversary says Chan Chun Sing, the Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. The public will be able to pay their tributes at the Istana Park, the Duxton Plain Park in Tanjong Pagar as well as outside Parliament House from Mar 19 until Mar 27.
Featuring special photo panels chronicling the endeavours of the nation's first prime minister, long queues are expected at the three sites, much like last year's mourning period. Aside from the three locales, over 100 ground-up initiatives are being organised as well in remembrance of the man.
It's a 'purrfect' life for Singapore's pampered pussies
Cats who are tired of the rat race in fast-paced Singapore have a new high-end leisure option — a top-of-the-range hotel complete with designer beds, Roberto Cavalli wallpaper and Swarovski crystal-studded dining ware.
The Purrfection Suites are the ultimate in luxury for fussy felines looking for some quality downtime in the most upmarket surroundings.
Purified air is pumped into every room, while some even boast classical music on a Sensurround system to help stressed cats unwind.
The 14-room extension — exclusively for cats — is part of The Wagington, Singapore's first five-star dog hotel housed in a converted British colonial-era bungalow in the heart of the city-state's diplomatic quarter.
Veteran SIA flight steward dies a week after fall in Johannesburg mall
A veteran of 20 years with Singapore Airlines, Charles Chng unfortunately died in Johannesburg, South Africa last month during a trip at a shopping mall.
Chinese newspapers Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao reported that the 43-year-old flight steward had been at Johannesburg's Rosebank Mall on Feb 24 when he fainted, fell and hit the back of his head.
He was taken to hospital by paramedics after remaining unconscious for about half an hour. A week into his stay at the hospital, he had to be sent to intensive care after his condition worsened, and was pronounced dead soon after.
It was believed that Chng had fallen due to a stroke, as there were no signs of bleeding on the back of his head. No other signs of injury on his body was found.
Malay man reacts accordingly when bribed to move to another table because of bigoted children
Another day, another brush with racism? Even worse — parents who enable their children's prejudice against folks of other races, therefore raising little racists. Much like the time when a man's experience watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens was completely ruined.
In an image that's been shared around across Facebook (though we can't vouch for its authenticity, considering the name's been whited out), a Malay man recounted an ugly experience with discrimination. Imagine if you will, being bribed to scoot off a table just to accommodate bigotry. Ghastly, we know. But this man certainly knew how exactly to react:
Dramatic blaze at Tanjong Pagar construction site easily put out by firefighters within minutes
The evening city skyline was rudely marred by thick plumes of black smoke as a massive 10m by 10m blaze broke out in a construction site along Anson Road.
Ah Boy goes to DB: Actor Noah Yap gets 9 month stint in detention barracks for smoking weed
Having gained stardom for depicting the trials and tribulations of being a national serviceman in the military, nothing could have prepared Noah Yap for this real-life role.
In a piece of scandalous news reported by The Straits Times, the 22-year-old star of Jack Neo's Ah Boys to Men series has been jailed for nine months in Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) detention barracks. Yap was unlucky enough to get caught for the consumption of cannabis.
OH! Potong Pasir will take you on an aesthetic trip into the neighbourhood's days of future past
As a neighbourhood, Potong Pasir has always been encased in a bubble of eccentric nostalgia. The municipality is a world of its own, like a diorama of life in '80s Singapore — but things are quickly changing of course, like everything else in the country.
Once a stronghold of Singapore's oldest opposition figure Chiam See Tong for three decades, the neighbourhood has been undergoing a crash course of modern amenities ever since the ruling People's Action Party took over in 2011. But even before that, Potong Pasir was once dominated by sand quarries, farms, ponds, and even the Alkaff Lake Gardens — which disappeared after 1945 following the Japanese occupation.
After losing suit against SAF, mother of NSman who died during training makes a defeated plea
Back in 2012, young Dominique Sarron Lee collapsed with breathing difficulties during a training exercise conducted by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
The 21-year-old national serviceman was taken to the Sungei Gedong Medical Centre before being conveyed to the National University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause? An allergic reaction to smoke grenades that had been used during the military exercise at Lim Chu Kang's Murai Urban Training Facility. A year after Lee's tragic death, the State Coroner ruled that the young man died from an acute allergic reaction from inhaling zinc chloride fumes, which came from the smoke grenades.
Budget airline Tiger Airways now completely under SIA's wing
Months after Singapore Airlines (SIA) launched a takeover offer for Tiger Airways, the budget airline will now be absorbed into the folds of the national carrier.
Since November last year, SIA went on a speedy trajectory towards taking full control of Tiger Airways, intending to delist and privatise it. Early last month, SIA's stake in Tiger Airways rose to over 90 percent — later on, they announced that they acquired more than 95.6 percent of the budget carrier.
The level allows for compulsory acquisition of all of Tiger Airway's outstanding shares. And since offer for the shares SIA doesn't already own is closing today, the budget carrier will be fully absorbed.
Jailed: Man who recorded voyeur videos of women in church's toilet and selling them online
Of all the places to commit sin, this dude just had to carry out his perverted misdeeds in a church he grew up in.
Former church employee Kenneth Yeo Jia Chuan has since been sentenced to 12 months in jail and fined $2,000 for installing cameras in his church's public toilets and tried to sell the obscene clips online. Channel NewsAsia reports that he pleaded guilty to eight counts of insulting the modesty of a woman, one count of attempting to sell obscene videos and one count of possessing obscene films. 58 more charges were considered during sentencing.
LTA clarifies about Joe Nguyen's ordeal in getting his Tesla Model S approved in Singapore
After all the buzz over one man's year-long ordeal to drive a Tesla Motors car in Singapore, the authorities have finally spoken up about their controversial procedures that made owning one of the cleanest cars in the world such a horrible experience.
Earlier this week, IT professional Joe Nguyen revealed how he managed to become the only owner and driver of a Tesla Model S in the country, which came with unending setbacks and supremely high costs.
AIA Singapore gets #rekt by photographer for requesting usage of his photos for free
It's an all-too-familiar plight that professional photographers sadly have to face throughout their career — companies who want to use their services and images in exchange for *drum roll* exposure.
For freelance photographer Tan Zexun — who runs his own photography company Pandawithacamera — the request is all too familiar. Yet another multi-million dollar company recently asked to use his images for free, but he wasn't having any of it. In fact, he had some pretty strong words for insurance firm AIA Singapore, who wanted to feature his pictures on their Instagram page as part of a social media campaign, with mere crediting as remittance.
MDA orders TOC to return $5,000 to foreign company that advertised on their website
It's been a pretty tough week for the folks running sociopolitical site The Online Citizen.
First, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam accused its editors of running an "orchestrated campaign, using falsehoods" regarding the Benjamin Lim case in Parliament. "It is sad to see this level of dishonesty and politicisation of this matter," the Minister said about the site's series of reports on the controversial episode.
Now, the Media Development Authority (MDA) has ordered The Opinion Collaborative (TOC) Ltd to return advertising revenue received from a foreign company.
AIA Singapore's social media agency responds to dispute; photographer remains unimpressed
Yesterday, AIA Singapore got into the crosshairs of the creative industry for being the latest multi-million dollar company asking for the usage of images for free — offering only credit as renumeration. Fed up with yet another case of getting the offer of "exposure", freelance photographer Tan Zexun of Pandawithacamera did not take it lying down.
