There's a lot of things that we're definitely unsatisfied about living in Singapore (housing prices are just one), but folks should be glad that their passports unlock access to a lot of nations around the world.

Once again, Singapore is ranked as one of the top countries in the world with the most travel freedom — our little red booklet possesses unrestricted access to 173 countries.

According to the Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index, Singapore lands on fifth spot — tied with Austria and Japan — in the world rankings, underneath the likes of Germany, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States and more.

An elderly man may have been used to the stench from a clowder of cats and cat shit in his house, but his neighbours obviously found it unbearable ever since he started hoarding felines in 2000.

The authorities thus acted — dozens of cats were removed from the unit at Block 207 along Yishun Street 21 this morning. Channel NewsAsia reports that there were at least 30 cats kept in cages caked with faeces and surrounded by skittering cockroaches.

The owner of the house — 63-year-old Roslani Ahmad — insisted that he was not abusing the cats, and says that they're "lovely" and "lucky" to him. He claims to purchase three or four bags of cat food each month for his cats.

Fare evaders will soon be getting a bigger slap on the wrist for not paying the costs of getting on trains and buses, thanks to the Public Transport Council (PTC)

Starting on Monday, the PTC has imposed a higher penalty fee of $50 for fare evasion, a $30 increase from what it is right now. The $50 penalty fee will similarly apply for commuters who misuse concession tickets.

Enforcement action can also be taken against commuters found attempting to travel with paying the appropriate fare — currently, action can only be taken against them after they actually travelled. That means you're getting into trouble even if you've simply tail-gated at fare gates.

After such a traumatic episode such causing a death in a traffic accident, you'd think Jason Chia Junjie has learned his lesson.

Alas, he has not.

In the early morning of Oct 13, 2014, 34-year-old Chia took his brother's rented car without permission so he could meet his friend.

While on the lookout for food in Geylang at 4.15am, he failed to keep his eye on the cross junction of Geylang Road and Lorong 22 and hit a 34-year-old Chinese national who was crossing the road.

Li Yong was flung to the extreme left lane and died from a head injury that very evening.

Witnesses testified that Chia had been driving pretty fast. Worst of all, he fled from the scene. But he returned the car at his brother's place in Lorong 8 Geylang.

In the long list of standard roadkill (frogs, pigeons, rats, angrily torn summon tickets, etc etc) we've seen on Singapore roads, a Sunda pangolin isn't exactly what you'd call a common sight.

Unfortunately for this one critter, even its large keratin scales stood no chance against speeding traffic. This morning, two officers from the National Parks Board alerted the Lee Kong Chian History Museum about a pangolin carcass in the Mandai Area.

The days where fights can break out because of staring incidents don't seem to be over, even though it's 2016 already. A 37-year-old man even died from his wounds after being stabbed in the neck following a confrontation at a coffeeshop in Hougang.

Lianhe Wanbao reports that the man — known as Ang — was found bloodied up with a wound in his neck, and was pronounced dead later on at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Apparently, Ang was said to have behaved in a pretty antagonistic manner at the coffee shop along Hougang Avenue 3 late Wednesday night. An assistant at the coffee shop speaking to Shin Min Daily News said that he was unhappy about the self-service policy, and had shouted at staff.

Apparently, our yellow-beaked black-feathered friends have been such a nuisance to the municipalities of Yishun and Clementi that the Agri-Food an Veterinary Authority (AVA) are employing drastic measures.

Residents in Yishun have been complaining to the authorities about the vexing noise produced by the mynah population, Channel NewsAsia reports.  Presumably, complaints continue to come in hot and heavy, as past efforts by AVA and Nee Soon Town Council haven't done enough — namely pruning trees and limiting food sources.

These two dudes wanted to play with the big boys, cruising on the roads on their motorised bicycles, probably presuming that they were the badasses in town. When you ride with big boys however, you get hit like big boys too — and hopefully this collision managed to knock some sense into them.

Said to have occured on Saturday afternoon between the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9 and Avenue 6, the electric-bike riders casually rode past a red light. Reality hit them hard when a car crashed into them, sending them sliding the two helmet-less idiots down the bonnet. They turned out to be okay in the end as they managed to walk it off, albeit dazed and confused.

The volume of errant retailers at Chinatown's People's Park Complex is so high that the mall will soon have its own self-service complaint kiosk.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) will be putting the machines to work at the mall due to the "high number of complaints" by consumers against retailers there, TODAY reports. Two terminals will be officially launched as soon as the mall's management signs an agreement with CASE.

The self-service kiosks are similar to the ones installed in similarly notorious mall Sim Lim Square since 2012. The IT and tech shopping centre has always been a bastion for errant retailers who part clueless customers away from their hard-earned money.

On Friday, five-year-old Ishta was revealed by the Singapore Zoo as the orangutan who'll be taking over the mantle of 'Ah Meng' and thus, the zoo's new ambassador. Ishta aka the new Ah Meng was picked out from the rest of her siblings for her affectionate personality as well as a striking resemblance to her late grandmother.
