Changi Airport

2015 was pretty momentous for the Changi Airport Group, who announced a record high in passenger traffic and aircraft movements in their airport last year.

Handling a record 55.4 million passengers passing through the airport, it was a notable 2.5 percent increase from the previous year, with just 5.29 million passenger movements in December alone. Last month had been the highest ever traffic Changi Airport has ever achieved in a month since it opened in 1981, and their daily record was also broken on the Saturday before Christmas when over 192,000 passengers passed through during the 24 hours.

Aside from foot traffic, there was also a 1.4 percent increase in landings and take-offs during the year, amounting to 346,330. They also clinched their 500th Best Airport award back in November, which by now should be passé for Changi Airport.

What do Manchester United and Sports Hub have in common right now? Truckloads of complaints and pertinent issues have been ailing both parties — one is putting up a disappointing performance without iconic manager Alex Ferguson, the other is a disappointing stadium wracked with teething issues.

In the near future, the fates of both ailing giants might intertwine according to The Straits Times. Sports Hub chief executive officer Manu Sawhney has revealed to the paper that discussions have been taking place between the Sports Hub and the English club. If all goes well, Manchester United will be playing on the National Stadium pitch some time next year.

Dayum Maybelline Singapore, you got burnt. A marketing attempt involving young heartthrob Benjamin Kheng backfired pretty badly on them over reinforcing gender stereotypes.

In an attempt to jump on the gender equality bandwagon, the makeup brand put on some guyliner on the very handsome frontman of The Sam Willows — which is so last summer anyway, and doesn't really shake up gender norms.

After over three months of being detained in Indonesia over a permit screw up, prominent singer-songwriter Gentle Bones heads back into the fray with a debut concert this June at the Esplanade Concert Hall.

Of course, this is the second time Universal Music Singapore made the announcement of his debut concert. Initially, the Joel Tan's big show was meant to go on (and had sold-out too) last December, but was cancelled "due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control". Later on, it was eventually revealed that the show was cancelled because Tan and his music entourage weren't able to leave Indonesia at all.

As with all electric-powered personal transportation devices (e-scooters, hoverboards, e-unicycles, etc), more regulations are being enforced upon them to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) aren't taking any chances with these newfangled devices and are progressively imposing stricter penalties and measures. Come Feb 1, electric bicycles will need to comply to new requirements in accordance to the European Standard EN15194 in order to to be approved. Once the power-assisted bike (PAB) is given the thumbs up, it will be sealed with LTA's new orange seal.

Red packets aren't only reserved for us humans this Chinese New Year — the wild residents of Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, River Safari and Singapore Zoo are also getting into the spirit of the season with festive treats.

Considering it's the Year of the Monkey, the Singapore Zoo's tree-climbing critters including the cotton-top tamarin, Javan langur and golden-headed lion tamarin will be getting delights such as oranges, nuts and seeds.

Other species are also getting involved — parrots will be greeting everyone "Gong Xi Fa Cai"; pandas will be receiving giant ang pows; Malayan tigers will be uncovering hidden treats. Of course, a Lunar New Year celebration won't be complete without acrobatic lion dance performances (no real lions involved) which will take place across all four parks.

Singapore loves touting their stringent corruption-free practices, and it seems to be proven when the republic was found to be among the top 10 least corrupted nations in the world.

The latest Corruption Perceptions Index released by non-governmental organization Transparency International ranked 167 countries according to their scores in the perceived level of public sector corruption. Singapore may have placed eighth in the whole list, but the country's scores have progressively dropped since 2012.

A laptop accidentally left on the bus is as good as gone, or so Chelsey Chow believed at first.

The polytechnic student was crestfallen — after all it held everything she needed and will need for school,  especially since she had four presentations and five projects due in the coming weeks.

Even after rushing down to Eunos Bus Interchange to ask around for her lost laptop, she remained downcast about the chances of finding it.

"I mean, besides a wad full of $100 bills, i don't think anything could be more tantalising than a lonely, vulnerable, unprotected laptop commuting alone on the treacherous journey aboard public transport, right?", she wrote in a long Facebook post.

Singapore got duly beaten by Bangkok as the top destination city in Asia Pacific, settling in at the second spot with 11.88 million visitors recorded last year.

The honor of top destination city in the world goes to London with 18.82 million international visitors, while runners-up Bangkok gets 18.24 million, according to MasterCard. "Given the very thin margin that London has over Bangkok, about half a million international visitors, their rivalry for the top rank is likely to persist," they wrote.

The MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index charts 132 of the most important cities in the world and how many international visitors arrive at each of the cities.

Justin Trudeau, we're coming for you. The Singapore dollar was able to reach parity and even surpassed the Canadian Dollar in recent days — a first since March 1995.

Bloomberg reports that the Singdollar first reached parity with the Canadian dollar on Jan 14, maintaining minor fluctuations before hitting power strides last week when a local dollar was equivalent to C$1.0148 on Jan 19. The day after that, the Singdollar fell but still remained stronger with S$1 being equivalent to C$1.0087.

Since then, the Canadian dollar grew stronger. As of writing, C$1 is trading at S$1.0131. Bloomberg says that Canada's economy and currency have been majorly affected by the global commodities plunge.

48% of traffic accidents on Friday occur during evening peak hours: Aviva

In an oddly specific find, insurance company Aviva revealed that 48 percent of car accidents on Friday occur in the hours when folks are on the way home.

The find is particularly peculiar, especially since no other days will you find this happening. On Mondays for example, only 26 percent of accidents happen during the same hours of 5.30 and 8pm.

Of course this can probably be explained by TGIF — folks are rushing back home to make full use of the weekend.

Aviva's 2015 claims data also revealed that most accidents commonly occur near roads that are undergoing major construction, or at least exposed to construction projects in the area. They've also highlighted the top 10 accident hotspots around Singapore, which is handy to keep in mind when you're driving down them:

Significant progress has been made in the local music scene of recent years, with so much more breadth, width and depth in content and sonic spectrum — and yet the majority of society often refuses to believe so.

Such unpleasantries still exist, and none so are more affected than local contemporary musicians themselves, who are actually contributing to the greater good of the nation's music landscape. With so much revulsion towards them and their works, local music advocates Just Support Lah wanted to get the reactions of musicians when confronted with dispiriting comments online. Five illegal immigrants who tried to have a swim around the borders of Singapore were netted by the Police Coast Guard (PCG) recently for attempting to enter and leave Singapore unlawfully.

In the early morning of Jan 20, PCG spotted three suspicious-looking floating objects at the sea off Senoko. Believing them to be swimmers, officers successfully intercepted the trio for the offence of unlawful entry into Singapore.

Two days later, PCG detected a swimmer at sea off Fuji Jetty. The 45-year-old man was intercepted and arrested as well for attempting to illegally enter Singapore.

The day after that, a 31-year-old man was arrested at the sea off Sungai Mandai for trying to leave Singapore illegally by swimming across the Straits of Johor to Malaysia.

Really, what did this man expect when he told a total stranger that he wanted to see her naked?

51-year-old Philip Sudhan Dhanaraj has since been sentenced to 10 weeks' jail for insulting the modesty of a woman, verbally abusing a bus driver, as well as stealing two bottle of alcohol from a 7-Eleven store, The Straits Times reports.

Dhanaraj had been travelling on SMRT's nightrider bus service NR7 in Oct 31 last year when he approached a fellow passenger to ask if she had a boyfriend. His attempts to strike conversation was ignored as the woman continued to ignore him and speak on her phone.
