Last month, a case was heard about 28-year-old Jonathan Tan Huai-En’s Absence-Without-Official-Leave (AWOL) status in National Service. It reached the conclusion of a four-month jail term earlier today, with Jonathan intending to appeal this verdict, Channel NewsAsia reports.

His family took Jonathan and his brother to Canada after he completed his Primary School education at the age of 12 (approximately in 2001), due to their struggles with the Chinese language in school.

Not intending to return to Singapore, the family became Canadian citizens in 2005. Except Jonathan and his younger brother, who were not able to renounce their Singaporean citizenship due to unfulfilled NS obligations.
