From 2017, taxi drivers will not have to adhere to a minimum daily mileage of 250km. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be streamlining its Taxi Availability framework next year and getting rid of this requirement for cabbies. Reasons include the growth in popularity of taxi booking apps and more options for private-hire car services such as Uber and Grab.

However, the LTA will continue to maintain regulations requiring the majority of taxi operators' fleets to stay on the roads during peak hours. But this will be simplified by taking away the requirement for the 'shoulder peak' hours of 6am to 7am and 11pm to midnight. So between peak periods of 7am to 11am and 5pm to 11pm, 85 percent of taxi operators' fleet will have to be on the roads.
