What it is: A project by Fabio De Souza — of now closed Lil’ Papa’s Weiners — and actor Keagan Kang, The Papa Shop offers up craft beer, cider, spirits, wine and sake from an industrial-looking kiosk out in Kallang, just by the new CT Hub building. It’s mainly a self-service joint: Just grab a few bottles and pay at the counter for takeaways, or make your way out to the 50-seat alfresco area to throw back your choice drinks.
What’s hot: Modelled to look like an MRT Station, the basic space is decorated with train station motifs and a cute bobble headed mascot, which help create a fun friendly atmosphere. They also stock a real respectable selection of craft brews from Danish Frost Bite Pale Ale ($13.80)—aromatic with pine needles and orange peel—to local bottles like Jungle Beer’s Quayside Coolie Vanilla Porter ($9.50). Plus, there’s an impressive range of boutique spirits including cult favourite Bulleit Bourbon ($69) from Kentucky. And if the drink options seem overwhelming, the helpful owners are ever ready with drink recs. We love how the prices are good, the place is pleasantly relaxed and no-frills, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some local celebs (friends of co-owner Kang). Though it seems out of the way, the shop is really just a hop and skip from the hip Jalan Besar hood and Lavender MRT.
What’s not: The bottle shop’s unpretentious vibe is a big part of the appeal. But if you’re fussy about your glassware, it’s best to take your spirits to-go. It’s strictly plastic cups at this joint, and food options are limited to simple junk food-y snacks ($1-5) like Tong Garden nuts and Pringles. But we can’t complain too much — at least the shop is cool with “outside food”. Just do a quick food run to Lavender Street Food Centre or order up delivery meals.
Verdict: Hot. We love the laid back surrounds and the well-priced boutique brews and craft spirits — it’s the perfect post-work, pre-clubbing hangout.
