Two Myanmar nationals made the mistake of presuming that security will be a little more lax during the holidays, and were promptly caught in the wee hours of Tuesday morning for attempting to leave the country illegally.
Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint were alerted by the Police Coast Guard about two men sneaking along the water pipeline towards Malaysia at about 4am.
Both Myanmar nationals — aged 26 and 42 — were arrested 10 minutes later, equipped with inflated bicycle tubes used as flotation devices. They were believed to have overstayed in Singapore.
If convicted for overstaying, they'll face up to six months in prison and at least three strokes of the cane, while it'll be up to six months in jail and a maximum fine of $2,000 for illegal departure.
