In a bid to dupe vulnerable foreign workers who may not know of laws here, employment agency Career Central overcharged two clients.
Even before their job placements, two foreign job seekers were charged $7,519 and $7,919, more than than twice the amount of their monthly salaries. The Employment Agencies Act states that agencies aren't allowed to charge clients any amount exceeding two months of their monthly salary.
Each of them were overcharged in excess of $919. They were instructed to pay various non-prescribed fees (aka bullshit charges like administrative fees and resume marketing fees) at various stages of the recruitment process.
The Ministry of Manpower has since cracked down on Career Central, who were fined $6,000 for their offences. Their employment agency license remains suspended and is being reviewed right now.
