The implementation of the extra demerit point system within school zones last January saw a whopping 45 traffic offences recorded, 17 from speeding and 16 due to careless driving.
Under the new system, motorists can be issued demerit points for committing offences within zones largely frequented by school children, including for beating the red light and not showing consideration to pedestrians.
The Singapore Traffic Police have also announced officers will be deployed more frequently to school zones during peak hour periods.
